I just installed the DHX 20 minutes ago and have no idea of ride characteristics. What I do know is that it is nearly a 1/2 pound(.420)lighter than the 5th element.

Very excited to ride it tomorrrow!

is this a after market upgrade? or a OEM setup? how much is the difference $$ over 5th? Sorry for asking that much coz my riding mate is about to purchase a VP Free and considering getting it with a DHX. thanks :)

Yeah man let us know how it rides and compares to the 5th, I've been a little unhappy with the "dead" feeling of the 5th on my free and am thinking about a DHX.

Also, is that weight with the steel or ti spring?

The shock IS slimmer than the 5th E, and it's an XL frame.
I dunno, the 5th and the DHX are very similer size-wise. The DHX is definitely bigger than the old vanilla RC. Much longer resi, larger diameter, much larger shaft, etc. I replaced a 5th with the DHX, I thought they were pretty much the same volume-wise.

It rides NOTHING like the 5th :D

I have 3 rides on it, only one could really be called "downhill". I posted initial impressions (hint, see "search" thread). I'm waiting till I have more time on it though to make some more well-thought out comments about the action and adjustments.

So I rode my Free with the DHX this morning and was very happy with performance. Mind you, I only rode a 5th Element for 2 weeks so by no means can I give an in depth comparison of the two. I guess the most noticeable difference is the beginning of the stroke, the DHX seems to activate with a much smoother feel. I've got the propedal 3 clicks in from completely off, trying to let the suspension do the job it was desigened to do...create a platform.

Anyway, 1 ride doesn't tell the tale.

And the DHX is a 1/2 pound lighter with steel spring, so should be a full pound lighter with a ti.

Sweet, thanks for the update and keep us posted, seems like a lot of folks are curious about that shock.

You said: "I've got the propedal 3 clicks in from completely off, trying to let the suspension do the job it was desigened to do...create a platform."

Maybe I don't understand but I thought one of the benefits of the DHX was that the propedal platform adjustment is independent of the other settings, and that if you run it almost off there will be almost no platform...?

I was eluding to the fact that the vpp frame design itself should provide a solid platform due to chain torque, which is why I've almost completely turned off the propedal. Seemed to work ok on a 30 minute climb this morning, but haven't busted any loooong climbs on it yet.

And yes, all adjustments are separted which is nice.

Very interesting indeed! Nice shock, from what I've seen/learnt so far.

Also let us know what its like for holding air. My 5th Element was pretty lame for that, despite having been upgraded and custom tuned.

FWIW, my riding partner owns a shop and was able to directly compare the manitou swinger, the 5th, and the DHX 5 on his VP Free. I.e kinda like an MBA shootout, but more intelligently done over a longer period. His riding emphasizes fast speeds on very rocky terrain. He rarely does big drops.

The winner (for him anyway): the fox DHX.

In terms of holding air, he does top off the DHX chambers fairly frequently (every couple of rides).
