Hi there

Would any of you good Monkeys happen to know if this combo would go well together: A saint crankset, a Evil srs guide and a VP Free frame?

And a little bonus question: Is it possible to run the saint chainring together withe the evil guide. I think I read somewhere that this ring could not be mounted on the "rear" of the tabs?!?

Hope you can help me, and maybe even post a picture of your VP Free crank setup.

well...now I don´t need to worry about using the stock chainring... But I still would like to know if this setup would work on a VP Free..

Thanks

You might have an issue with the lip of the outboard bearings not facing up properly due to the raised molding around the link just behind the bb cup. But I believe there is a page on speedgoat explaining how they got around it using a spacer or seomthing.

04 Saint Cranks will not work on the VP Free with any guide and it is highly advisable they are not used on that frame at all. There is not enough purchase on the spindle for the non drive side crankarm to hold onto. Originally Santa Cruz told people that Saint cranks are fine but that is no longer the case. They reccomend only ISIS now. For 05 though I believe that Shimano is going to do a wider spindle and therefore it should allow to be used on a VP Free. The same problem exists with Race Face Diabolous crank sets.

ok..so I can only run a saint crankset on a vp free if i dont use a chainguide? ..or use a chainguide that don´t take up space on the effective axle length... ie. the dmr chaincage that attaches to the seattube??

hmm thats just too bad...

What axle length would I want to use when running ISIS... 118 or something?

just wait a second  how would running a saint crankset on a 68mm BB with a BB mountet chainguide differ from running a saint crankset on a 73mm BB without a chainguide? To my best knowledge the overall width "used" on the spindle would be about the same...or am I wrong?

Go read the information at this link:

http://www.speedgoat.com/feature-vpfree.asp

It points out the issues with the BB shell and outboard bearing cups. Not sure if they tried a chain guide or not. The Saint cranks probably won't work until a longer spindle is available. The Diabolus can work now but may not give you a great chain line (a longer spindle is supposed to be in the works for these too).

I can´t seem to fint any info on the SC website about what size BB to use on a vp free...Surely somebody must have had this problem before and found a solution?

Santa Cruz sells a Truvative 128mm BB for the the VP-Free, at least thats what they use in their build kits. You could confirm this by calling or emailing their support line but with Interbike going on don't expect a reply this week.

There were numerous posts on this subject over on www.mtbr.com earlier this year. Do a search on those and you will find out what you need to know.

at this time Saint cranks do not work on a vpfree nor do race face diablous as already stated.

You can set up a e13 SRS with a 128mm ISIS b.b. (truvativ)
