Bistec con queso? Not at Geno's Steaks.

An English-only ordering policy has thrust one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints into the national immigration debate.

Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno's -- which together with its chief rival, Pat's King of Steaks, forms the epicenter of an area described as "ground zero for cheesesteaks" -- has posted small signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING `SPEAK ENGLISH."'
At rival Pat's....

And a manager at Pat's, Kathy Smith, said of Geno's English-only policy: "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. I'd rather listen to the Spanish than the foul language of the college students."

I still don't know what a cheese cake steak is and what Phil and geno have got to do with it.

It's pretty self-explanatory...It has cheese and steak and more cheese....some more steak....and for good measure, some more cheese. You *can* put lettuce on it....but I don't ....I just toss on some carmelized onions and some roasted red and green peppers....then a few sliced jalepenos....mmmm...oh right...on a really quality hoagie roll.

DAMN IT ALL!!! Now I have to walk 15 blocks to go get one from the place cross town....there goes the lunch hour.....

It's just thinly sliced beef, grilled up, and served on a roll with melted cheese on top. The usuall add-ons are mushrooms, green peppers and onions, but many people add a lot of other veggies.

It's delicious

this whole language thing is getting out of hand. You immigrate to a new country? surprise! you should learn the f***ing language. it makes life lots easier on both ends once it is learned. now, i am not saying this should be required, but its common sense. if i moved to say, france, wouldn't i be expected to learn some french? i'm all about preserving cultural heritage, but when you refuse to learn the language of a country you immigrated to and expect its native (yes i know whitey ain't native 'round here, perhaps lifelong citizens would be better?) residents to learn your language to accomdate you, you're just being a lazy, self-centered ass.

i know that can sound hypocritical, as US travelers go to other countries and expect people to understand english, but there's a difference between traveling and immigration. (for the record if you are visiting a foreign country you should at least have a fundamental knowledge of the language so you can get around. just my $.02)

warning: the following statement is a joke and is only intended for the purpose of amusement.

What? the Mexicans moved to America and refused to learn english? they're lazier than i thought!

that would be fine as long as they made an attempt to order in english. and they are trying to learn i know that it is one of the hardest languges to learn and it takes a long time to become fluent.

Lazy? I think not. They are far too busy stealing jobs from Americans to take the time out of their siestas and tequila drinking to learn english.

what happened with "the customer is always right"????

a non-english speaking costumer is a paying costumer before anything else, and being a costumer gives you all the rights you can buy.

i like how you link in one stroke of genius two things that have absolutely nothing to do. and in fact, do it with authority.

because we all know, once a few more people learn spanish, that will be the doomsday of the american economy (the main reason of why mexico sucks so bad), and it will turn into mexico.
there you go, the great unified theory of anthropology:hot:
