Go ride it on a fully rigid CX bike!!

I had forgotten how spooky it was descending rough terrain in the drops!! I was like “where are my disc brakes!!!!”. I had never ridden this trail on a CX before - only with my 5-Spot - give you a different perspective on things that's for sure! Plus it was a bit wet and slippery! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE….

Fun times tho… :thumb:

Zedro, you got me - very good point. Plus I totally forgot that I don't ride since i spend too much time here! Sheesh...what was I thinking? ;)

This ride was one of those rare time when I appreciated the climbs more than the descents! ;)

ive never ridden a cx bike... but have had my share of riding a 20" on trails. I worked at a camp one summer for 5 weeks and thats all i had and there was a pretty gnarly dh trail i was ripping that thing on, soooo sketchy. i think im going to take a 20" out in the woods a few times before this season

Yeah, my riding buddy is riding a fully rigid SS right now on terrain that I just fly down on my 6/6" trail bike(he's waiting for a 5 spot with fox 36). Some of the stuff he is doing looks pretty hairy on that bike, but he does have disc brakes on it, and that makes a HUGE difference in terms of control. I can imagine how "fun" it is in that configuration, although it is suprising what you can roll down if you just "commit" sometimes.

Yeti: yeah, I've had it for a long time now. It’s an old GT ZRX. That's what I used to log road miles when I raced XC. I hadn't touched that bike in over 3 years. Since my 5-spot is out of commission and I wanted to ride trails - this morning I decided to take the slicks off and mount the trail tires on.

JM: I was pretty surprised at how well it took corners (well smooth corners that is). You’re buddy is going to LOVE his 5-spot!! I already miss mine ;) Can’t wait to get some new cranks for it.

Another cool thing about skinny ties – they cut through horse dung like a hot knife in butter! ;)

I ride my CX bike on trails a pretty decent amount. It is certainly interesting. It's neat to ride the same sections on different bikes. There's one trail section I ride a lot that is a bit steep and has a bunch of large roots criscrossing over the top. On my CX bike I need to be careful, take it slow, keep on the brakes. On my XC bike, I just ride over it without much issue. I rode it on a freeride bike a few times. I couldn't even get going fast enough to make it interesting.

What trail was this on?

I've been riding a rigid SS for the last few months. Even taken it on singletrack when I had road slicks on it(sketchy!). I'm thinking of picking up some CX tires so that I can ride to the trails quickly and then ride the trails without having to change tires. I think it may happen in the next week now.

ito: It's a local trail here in San Jose (SEE HERE)

CBJ: it has gears, two wheels, human powered and goes on dirt. Sounds cool to me! :thumb:

CB: NICE!! I with mine had top bar levers - but I REALLY don't feel like putting any $$ on my CX bike right now ;)

hahaha...you answered all your own questions BB!! :thumb:

I rode some of the trails at Fremont Older - there are some flippin' steep climbs there, I was looking for my gears! :( If I plan on riding that thing more I need to adjust the gears. Just to get into the park you have this long steep climb (ask Calros). I had to mash it all (out of the saddle) bottom to top - thought I was going to puke once I got to the top.

Sweet...
I never rode there.
Always heard about it though.
When you get the 5-spot back, you and Carlos need to go hit up Henry Coe.
That place WHIPS you into shape like no other place I've ever been.
Plus, it has what I feel to be the best singletrack decent of all time. Well, Maybe not quite as fun as Whittmore Gulch, but close.

Talked to the wife and she is still not cool with the CX bike :)

Riding the CX bike could be a blessing in disguise as it should get you in great shape.

What would it be like to put Drops on an XC bike with skinny Cyclo-cross tires.
Would that work, or is the geometry all screwed?

Oh, and what would I do about the brakes adn shifters?
I don't want to have to get new shifters.

Coe is awesome for those crazy epics where you bite off more than you can chew. Endless singletrack. Bring a water filter and your climbing legs, and watch out for the wild pigs.

I mean, don't ever go, it really sucks...
