I'm working on a project for a client about the subject and wow, some salts are extremely corrosive and still being used.
If you care about your car, I recommend washing it in a car wash that has an under-carriage wash. While I found no info on catastrophic failures, I see that it does reduce the life of a car.
Here in Colorado, they use less corrosive stuff (Mag-Chloride) -with- an anti-corrosive agent, but it's STILL corrosive.
