Hi all,

I received my new road bike last week. Yes, I am teh excited. While most of the bike needed minimal assembly, the drivetrain was out of whack. I was in the process of adjusting the front der. when the cable tension bolt "broke." When I say broke, I mean that it simply spun, with no in or out. Upon further review, it looks like the inner thread dettached from the mech and gave the bolt nothing solid to thread onto.

Q: how the fvck do I fix this? Loctite or warranty?

Thanks. You guys rock.

Loctite sounds like a temporary and future-frustrating solution. What happens when you need to make an adjustment? And you can't do anything on the fly when you're miles from your tube of glue.

Sorry, I say warranty or ask (purchase if they sell them) your LBS for a replacement bolt. Use one of them electric hand drills with a round saw that's about 1" in diameter? (sorry, I forget all the names of the drills and bit thingies) Cut the dead bolt off if you get an easy replacement.

PS: what bike did you get?

Thanks. You speak words of wisdom. It sounds like a warranty may be my best bet, with a purchase being the next best option.

I purchased a Kestrel Talon.

As for the FD, it's not the bolt that's the problem. The problem is the nut that the bolt threads onto. It's no longer set in the mech, the baby just spins. I guess that's called an anchor bolt or something.

I spoke with a friend the other day about the derailleur and he said that they recently started seeing a jump in problems. For some unknown reason, Shimano went to a press fit type deal on its front derailleurs, seemingly walking away from a prior design (nut) that worked without major issue. Anyway, my friend went above and beyond the call of duty and found me a replacement mech. He da man.
