Must be pretty sh!tty if even their sponsored riders rather use nothing or maxipads. One of Minnaar's main sponsors makes body armor........

Agree. It is kinda sad to see them doing things like taping cereal boxes and maxi pads to their backs when pretty much all of them have sponsors that make armor. If they'd actually wear some sort of pads, it would help drive the development of very light armor that actually works well. It's not like the requirement to wear pads in France was a surprise.Must be pretty sh!tty if even their sponsored riders rather use nothing or maxipads.
in a way you're rightThere's a difference between an injury and a boo-boo. Injury keeps you from riding or worse, boo-boos are uncomfortable but create no real hindrance (E.G. roadrash)
Most DH padding/gear protects against boo-boos. The only exceptions that come to my mind are helmets, Leatts, & (to a lesser degree) knee pads. There are shades of grey in perception here of course, but most racers seem to agree as evidenced by their protective gear choices...
It's not so much a case that they don't want to run what their sponsors made, it's the fact that no one was informed of the rule changes so didn't bring any armour. It's pretty hard to get armour shipped in to a race at the last minute, in butt-****-nowhereAgree. Minnaar's sponsor makes this:
O'neal Stealth Protector Shirt
Surely, he could have had them make a modified "prototype" version ahead of time, assuming he would have wanted something lighter (although the review already says it is minimalist)
Ben Reid is sponsored by TLD, who makes the below vest. This one has removable pads, so he could have removed everything that wasn't required without even having something custom made.
TLD 3800 Vest
how could they have not known? they raced in France previously at La Breasts and all had to wear armor of some sort.it's the fact that no one was informed of the rule changes so didn't bring any armour. It's pretty hard to get armour shipped in to a race at the last minute, in butt-****-nowhere

but a great backprotector will help to prevent spinal injuries, same goes for elbow pads. do you guys know that the nerves which control your hand run on the outside of your elbow?
i am aware this is anecdotical evidence but i am one, crashed a few years back in a race run hit a tree full on backwards with my dainese jacket. i basically flattened the Dainese back protector. i wasn't able to use my back muscles for days and i still think i might have hurt myself pretty badly if not for the safety jacket. but oh well. do as you feel comfortable. As a point of interest & at the risk of sounding more argumentative than I mean to... how many bike related spinal injuries have you heard of were a result of impact rather than compression/over-rotation? I haven't heard of any...
Back protectors seem to solve a nonexistent problem. Leatts address a more real and present danger.
Good point on the elbow protectors (shades of grey)... I didn't know that.

Snapped my olecranon (point of the elbow) off something like 10 years ago by crashing onto a rock from height. Still can't and never will be able to completely straighten that arm, can't curl the pinky and ring finger on that hand independently due to the nerve being ganked.in a way you're right

You didn't miss anything. We all missed the independent studies pointing to efficacy, though.Speaking of Leatt's, a bit of a side-track, but why the hell does it seem like the neck brace (regardless of brand) has been almost completely abandoned this year by the pros...? Especially the Athertons after the incident with Dan...? They were wearing them for the rest of the season after his injury and now they aren't.
Did I miss something saying the pro's can't wear them this year?
