I just bought a new notebook with a built-in webcam and I want to buy one for my home PC so I can talk to my family when I'm on the road.
My question is: How do I connect? Do I go through a server somewhere? Do I need software?

Ime, Skype's web-cam quality is the best.
Potroast, if you have an older style digital camera it may have a web-cam function. I know my old Fuji brick (2001 vintage) has and the picture quality is quite good, better than a dedicated web cam though obviously not as convenient.
