so, my catholic wedding is in a few weeks.

last weekend my mom asked me "have you thought about what would you like to receive as a wedding present, for yourself" (as in, not like a washer/dryer for the house).

i said "anything you give me will be great, mom".
so my mom told me how my dad got a pretty kickass watch when they got married, and that she thought it would make a great present for me too.

she said, considering how i always liked my dad´s ss daytona, she thought of 2 stainless steel sports watch i might like.

she said she has thuoght about a steel rolex submariner or a omega speedmaster (i like the white face with black small dials, but i dont know if i can find one )
she asked which one i´d prefer, or if i liked another. i also like iwc.

submariner. there is also a nylon strap (nato style) available which is pretty sweet.

speedmaster. i like this combination, although am not sure they still make this one.

i also like iwc, though not sports watches.

the portuguese (one of the least expensive versions, sans complications)

and the portofino.

picks? suggestions?

i do not "need" a chrono really. my current watch has a chrono but i almost never use it.
but boy, they do look nice.

i have actually tried on the carrera in a duty free shop while waiting for a flight a few weeks ago. its pretty, but tag heuer has something of a bad association in peru. (its kinda of a douchebag´s watch).
am thinking i´d like to get something i could give to my kids in 20 years or something... i dont know if a tag heuer is a brand that will last a lot.

in tokyo, i tried a seiko ananta (only available in japan) and it was one of the most awesome diver-watch ever, seriously, better finished and felt better built than a submariner. although its a freaking seiko.

I really don't like chronos either. I do own a TAG and like it for an every day watch.

If I was able to ask for a gift and $ wasn't an issue, I'd want a Chronoswiss Grand Regulateur.

yeah, i prefer chronos myself too. my two Tag's arent and i tend to wear my chrono Oakley GMT watch more then anything.

i dont think you have a problem with Tag's lasting. mine are over 15 years old and are still working great.its not like they are cheaply made watches. i guess if they have a bad rap in your country that would sway some people but i personally could give two sh!ts what people think about whats on my wrist.

I've had a Tag Professional for 15 years. Worn it pretty much every day of those 15 years. Its survived two deployments, two motorcycle crashes where it met pavement, a few fist fights where I'd forgotten to take it off before, and my ex-wife throwing it at me at full speed when I noticed she was trying to keep it for her new boyfriend and I caught her ass on it.

All and all, a grand watch.

to be honest, the best (as in practical) watch i´ve ever had was a $12 rubber watch i bought at a dutyfree shop in Lima, just before boarding a plane, when i noticed i had forgotten my watch at home.

the watch kept time flawlessly, kept time, day and date, had a chrono, was very easy to set (very useful, as i had to switch timezones like 3 times in a week), had an loud alarm clock (extraordinarily useful), had a light, had a rubber strap (very comfortable), was light and weatherproof.
seriously, best timekeeping device ever.

You can't go wrong with the Daytona. I've always liked the Omega Seamaster too. Very classy, works great with a suit, yet still works when you are wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

I would love to have enough cash to have a variety of leather band watches to wear with a suit, but it's just too much to have laying around. A stainless band is much more versatile, leather band looks odd when you try to dress down and wear one. As an only watch, I would never go leather band. When I add to the collection, leather band will be the only option.

My parents gave me a Tag Aquaracer when I graduated college. Never wore it for the first couple years, but now that I'm not a shop rat anymore I wear it everyday. Would feel naked without it now.

I like diver's watches. They really do work with just about any clothing for any occasion. The Omega Seamaster happens to be one of my favorites so it would be near the top of my list.

For something a little different, how about a Panerai or Patek Phillipe Nautilus?

This is a Seiko Diver (SKX007) on a leather Di Modell Chronissimo strap. It's the only watch I have to wear daily. It's a diver so it still dresses down just fine. I think this particular leather band is more versatile than the metal bracelet or rubber bands that most divers come with.

I love a bit of watch porn. If you were to get either of the two below I'd be pretty jealous.

I only have one watch, but I'm not sure why basic awareness that some things don't go together constitutes a meterosexual. Do you wear dress shoes with shorts? A t-shirt with suit pants?

So why is it a surprise that a $14 rubber-and-plastic watch might look funny with a suit? I mean, nobody here is arguing about the texture of their pocket square :D

Anyway, I always liked the titanium Omega Seamaster watches. Simple. I think I'd be terrified to wear it anywhere, though.

I can't afford to indulge such an expensive hobby but something about nice watches really appeals to me. Precision engineered machines, inside such nicely machined cases, often with exotic materials... If I ever had f**k-you money, I'd probably own a bunch.

Try to look at it as an investment. Get a watch that doesn't get cheaper in time.
Look at limited editions with technical and optical details others don't have.
Do some research before telling your mom to pull the trigger.

I really like either of the last two. My wife got me a leather watch, just a Fossil semi-skeleton, but I LOVE it and have gotten multiple comments on it. I used to have a titanium cheapie that I liked but I much prefer the casual/dressy option of the leather.

My personal favorite is Vacheron Constantin, but I can't afford one. Someday, maybe. I also like bell+ross, but I really don't like the OMG LARGE FACE style that's in right now. I can virtually promise you that those will be ugly as sin in 10 years.

This is what I have:

FWIW...

I have 2 Tags that I love.
I have a Baume that I love.
I have 2 Swiss Armys that I love, especially considering the relatively low price.
I have a Tissot, it's ok.
I have a Raymond Weil which is nice, but I don't wear it enough to really comment on durability.
I have a Movado which is ok.
I have Gucci which is ok.

Never been a rolex fan, but the submariner is a pretty classic watch.

I'd love a patek philippe some day.
