In a van.... down by the river
H-hour: 5:30
Destination: Waterton Canyon

With the recent brutal heat in DV-town the early morning rides have become a very welcome respite. Today a buddy and I decided we should bust out a quick 18-mile loop before work. Sadly, 12 of that is a dirt road and only 6 singletrack. But sahhhhweeeeeeeeet singletrack. :D

We reached the "Rest" in really good time and decided to just keep riding, instead of actually resting. The luge run through the Dark Woods was exhilerating as usual. The Trough was brutal. And the worse part now is the final descent back to the dam. The $hit was LOOSE. Like wash-your-front-tire-out-like-crazy loose. I'm gonna kill myself on that loose stuff one of these days.

Back to the cars at 7:00, at my desk before 8. Another good morning ride.

Cool man!

Speaking of loose, its the same all over. Rode Chimney Gultch last night, and its getting that powdery crap dirt on all the switch backs.

We need rain.

I think the rain actually *caused* the crazy loose conditions on the Roxy Loop. It's not soil-type loose but crazy little/mid-size rock-type loose. It's been like this before, but the stretch is getting longer and looser.

The drop at the tree is still simply drop-able. No hucking required (yet). :)

Ride Roxy loop past the Rest. Fairly newly cut trail just at the beginning of the Dark Woods. Take a right (there's signage) - climb to the ridge. Run the ridge. Descend the ridge. Take a right at a T.

Ride out to Indian Creek campground. Ride the road for about 2 blocks and look for singletrack to the left. Climb to an old (closed) fire road. Take a left. Resist the urge to take forks in the road. Ride it until it deteriorates into singletrack. Have a blast in the Tight Trees.

Take a left after a meadow and climb a bit, then descend and hook up with the Roxy Loop at the intersection before The Drop. Ride back to the canyon.

It's about 3 hours round. It's a blast. Tons of singletrack. Lots of climbing.

I didn't have any pics of the Roxy loop, but here's a pic of SS about to take one in the nards coming down a particularly rough section of the Colorado Trail on the way back from the Platte to the top of Waterton. :thumb:
