Get this - I ran out of ADHD drugs today. Refill didn't show up in time so none this am. I'm struggling to get shit done and stay on topic. And it feels like my head's going to explode talking with people because I have this never ending urge to just answer the question before they finish talking. Also the non-stop fidgeting hasn't stopped at all and isn't getting better.

I knew that it was helping, but not exactly how much. This is crazy how much it has helped given how little I'm getting done now.

This sounds strikingly familiar.

Do they just love the idea of being sued?

I also now have a serious urge to watch Hunt for the Red October.
Good luck for the families wanting to sue the CEO.

As I said to @Pesqueeb somewhere yesterday, original Das Boot, with the original German soundtrack and English subtitles :p

It seems like it would be a good idea to keep your deep sea submersible on a tether of some kind...for communications and other reasons. It also seems like orgs doing this for research/science would have a lot more safety.

Think about the potential issues with 2 and a half miles of tether (if not more), like tangles, broken lines, complications with marine life, etc. Conceptually it seems like a good idea, particularly in this case, but my understanding is that the lack of any tether helps allow access to the deepest depths. It's also my understanding that military and research orgs obtain certifications and otherwise meet enhanced safety standards that were not met here.

It's paywalled but NYT has a bunch of good information, including quotes from different people saying this particular vessel is pretty sketchy for a lot of reasons, how the company took shortcuts and ignored warnings, etc. There are quotes from a military guy somewhere in there saying it should have an escape hatch, redundant systems, etc., and that he wouldn't do a dive in it in a million years. (The escape hatch seems pretty important - imagine managing to surface after systems failures and STILL suffocating because no one can find you to let you out.)

Always placing the CEO on the shitbox mini-sub is indeed a bold, and seemingly effective legal strategy.

Bas Boot always a solid sub movie, K-19 Widowmaker is also a classic. Han Solo driving a reactor melt-down around the ocean, it can't not be great.

directly above the center of the earth
my 45 minute drive home after my last drop off in the delta turned into a 90 minute bumper to bumper slog on back farm roads when a moron crossed the center double yellow and caused a fatal head on collision each car doing 55mph. and shut down the main roadway. There is always some jackass in a hurry doing shit like that to get one more car ahead.

Getting nailed by these t-storms. Thankfully nothing bigger than pea sized hail, but the rain has been worthy of some flooding. Glad I live at the top of the mountain...

edit: predicting tennis ball sized hail just south of us, hopefully it stays just south of us...

Red Rocks is getting pasted right now, I wonder if it's dirty hippies getting a wash/knocked out by hail?
Injuries reported at Red Rocks. We got it pretty good for a bit. I wonder how the Land Cruiser is doing parked out on the street!

we leave early for Reno tomorrow so won’t get a chance to hobble over and check on it until next week

Well, one thing for sure, the owners/CEO etc of Oceangate will probably never put another vessel to sea again after the billionaire’s lawyers are through with them. And the lawyers of the other passengers.
I’ll be curious to see how iron-clad whatever waiver they had to sign will actually be.

Not sure if any of it will matter as it all happened in international waters. It will depend on what country the ship was flagged in. Most ships are flagged in 3rd world countries that allow them to do whatever the fuck they want.
