Weed = Bad, but alcohol and tobacco are legal, go figure. It will pass if the special interest let it. I just got an idea for a new empire.....

I think this will be disasterous for the head shops. If it actually becomes an industry where you have to start competing like a normal business, they will go tits up in a week.

Actually I think I may have just come up with a kickass business model.....

Seriously, pot is everywhere in the Bay Area.

There is a 15,000 foot cultivators superstore in Oakland than the city council attended the opening.

There are 20 medical dispensaries in San Francisco alone (pop 900k).

My next door neighbor grew 6 huge plants in his backyard, and all he needed to do be legal was to get a prescription (which takes about 10 minutes).

I'd need a marijuana prescription to live next door to you......

Actually, I was joking how I am the perfect roommate.

I come over with a bunch of booze, we anesthetize ourselves while watching MSNBC/Food Network/National Geographic, then I go home.

actually, weed is arguably the least harmful of the three. The only negative side effect of smoking weed is decreased lung capacity - and that's only due to the smoking method of consumption. Since there's other ways to consume it, its not really a valid argument.

edit: something else to point out: humans have been using marijuana for a long time

alcohol: been using for about 9,000 years
weed: been using for about 5,000 years
tobacco: only been in use (documented) for about 500 years

I wonder what kinds of business opportunities will arise out of legalization for the average person. (Unlike a corporation or individual with a ton of investment cash on hand) I wonder if I could become a dope farmer, or open my own dope shop.

Not that I would. Legal or not my inlaws would not be pleased to find me involved with pot. :D

Main one is the police/corections lobby. Less dope users going into the system means budgets drop and filling up the (newly built) jails is a growth industry as it stands now.
uh newly built jails? You must be out of the loop. California is looking to outsource prisoners to Mexico.

I wonder if Sam Brown was in it

Filmmaker Adam Scorgie explores the illegal marijuana industry in British Columbia, revealing how the international business is most likely more profitable than it would be if it was lawful in this enlightening documentary. Marijuana growers, law enforcement officials, physicians, politicians, criminologists, economists and celebrities -- including comedian Tommy Chong -- shed light on this topical subject in a series of compelling interviews.

yeah not sure, most of the growers interviewed were covered up all "gangsta like".Not saying he was a grower but.... Also very interesting hearing retired law enforcement agreeing to legalizing it as well.

If pot is legalized it'll be taken over by one of the main agricultural companies like Monsanto or DOW, who will make it even BETTER/STRONGER through resources devoted to plant genetics, and will probably outsource the entire production to Mexico or China. Then it'll get sold at Wal*Mart as a commodity and pretty much eliminate any and all local competition. In doing so, we'll erase any benefits that are gained by taxing the end product by raising our trade deficit...

Yay capitalism!!

Oregon is in the process of putting in dispensaries. Right now, as a patient, you can either grow yourself, or have someone grow for you. A grower can support up to 4 patients, at 6 mature plants and 20 starts per patient.

If the measure passes in November, you can become an unrestricted grower who supplies dispensaries. You have to jump through some legal hoops, but it's not overly tough. Just no history of getting caught and can't live 1000 feet from a school and you are in.

Once that happens, the street dealers will be out of work. Think of the impact it will have on the little guys? Think of all the jobs this destroys because now you can just simply buy it rather than just know someone.

Are you high?

Since when is a "street dealer" the kind of job we need to worry about keeping around?

I don't know.. we have dispensaries here in cali (and it's easy to get a card). I find that the prices have not gone down, the dispensaries have good herb but cost more than my "local dealer'. Also, dispensaries are not in every town and are generally not open 24/7.

Yes, the price will clearly go up here. Considering right now I could get up to 4oz a month for free compared to $1200 from Bob on the corner. But not only is free a good price, but the weed is BETTER.

Now a number of SONORML certified growers have agreed to continue to supply the patients they currently support at a greatly reduced rate if they choose to also grow for a dispensary. It will no longer be free, but certainly less than the store.
