So.......I've been jobless for a while now, and have come to the point where I was applying for everything and anything. I managed to apply for some entry level accounting position at a local credit union (basicly any job that said entry or would train) as I've been out of it for so long (2+ years) and wanting to change the field of work in didn't help....

So I interviewed for the spot...and got a call a few days later saying it was filled internally. I then was asked if I wanted to interview for a teller job. I said sure, why not and went for an interview.

Funny thing was is the accounting spot offered little to no personal interaction where as the teller is 100% people.......something I really don't care for. I never thought I was bad working with people (like the public) but in alot of ways I wanted something that didn't involve them.

So......they require you to wear a nicer shirt/tie/not jeans to work which I guess is expected for a bank job. They offer paid holiday's, paid sick/vacation time, paid medical/dental/vision insurance that the company pays for. The hours are normal, and the pay to start is $10-10.50 and then at 6 months you get a review & from that point on it's annual. It's full time work which at this point is the only way I'd surrvive. So there are some nice perks that I know many places around here for that amount ($10 to even $15) don't offer.

It's 2 blocks away from where I live (so I can walk) which is another plus. That was the main reason I even went in for an interview in the first place because it was so close to where I live.

My question is has anyone been a teller or IS a teller at a bank or credit union and enjoy it? It's a small setup but they are the credit union for the county (plus the hospital) so it does bring them enough bussiness to stay going. They did say there is advancements but where do you go in a bank situation as a teller? At my bank the same tellers are there 6 years later.....so it made me wonder.

Just anything really about it, it's always good to hear some other opinions about things :)

It'll probably be a little like retail. You'll be encouraged to sell the new promotions and talk people into signing up for products they didn't know they needed before.

But hey - you say you've been out of a job for 2 years? This is a no brainer - take the job. $10 - 10.50 sounds like a pretty sweet deal for being so long out of the loop. A job is a job. Take it and work it until something better comes along.

If it's a small credit union that's growing, the opportunities for advancement could me things like loan manager. Learning the mortgage biz can be very lucrative. Not necessarily at a CU but no one's making you stay there after you learn all you need to.

I was a teller for several years and it's not that bad of a gig. I'd say take it for now that way you'll have an income, but keep looking.

Does that pay sound about right to start? Just from your experience how much can a teller make?

Sounds about right for an entry-level teller job. By the time I decided to move on I was the vault teller and was making a wee bit more. It doesn't pay much, but paid vacation and holidays ( and banks close for everything) help out.

Some things to consider:
banks can't be closed for more than three days in a row. Not sure about credit unions, the rules may not be the same.

There is a chance you will be held up. I was. On the plus side, tellers usually do not get hurt.

It's not a hard job, just pay attention to da money and you'll be fine.

It was the company paid benifits and the fact they are closed on alot of Holidays made it seem like a decent deal, especially considering how close they are to where I live I wouldn't have to drive anywhere.......for a long time :)

I got a message on my phone from them earlier this morning.....everytime I answer it and it's with job's that I interviewed for they tell me "sorry you didn't get it" So I let them leave a message. I'll give them a call back and see what they say.

Good luck on that, hope it works out. I may not like working, but I do like being gainfully employed :)

Well I'm 24.........been off work since I was 22........so it's been a while :)

I agree......it's nice not working but when the $$$ starts to run out (and stuff starts falling apart) it's time to make a change.

I was a teller for awhile back in college but hated it really. It was total cush hours, but I didn't like standing all day, or dealing with the public. I liked it even less when they started forcing me to sell bank credit cards and push lines of credit and stuff. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

starting pay sounds about right, and i know people making more than that who don't get the same benefits you'd be getting; health insurance is a BIGGIE for mountain bikers. i'd say go for it, sometimes ya gotta do things you're not crazy about so you can get by, and this seems like one of those times. just be glad its not some crap job at the mall.

Well that is a biggie probably for anyone. I haven't had health insurance since I was 18........so that's almost 7 years now and had to pay for 1 thing that my previous health insurance (my parents) wouldn't have covered in the first place. So I figured paying $500 was cheaper for a one-time thing than paying $50+ a month for health insurance.

My girlfriend is similar......she makes more than I'd start at by $7, but pays $50? I think a month for insurance (just health), and then is getting the days the company is closed cut back and her PTO hours as well. So in a way it "sounds" like a better deal. They always do until you're into it :)

$10 an hour with bennies and you work indoors, sounds like a plan to me. I drove a tow truck for $10. Messy work and the hours sucked, but at least the pay was bad, right?

Just to keep it all in persepctive....$50 a month for health insurance is cheap. And a $500 doctor bill is pretty rare, not sure what it was for... a sliver maybe?
Sounds the bennies your getting are worth more than the check you take home......take it!

There are worse sounding jobs than bank teller...

Suckiest Jobs I Ever Had, in order of suck:

1. Working the graveyard shift at a cheese factory (I went home at 2 am on my "lunch" break on the first day and never returned)
2. Selling Men's clothes at JC Penney (although I hooked up with a girl in the Shoe dept, it wasn't quite worth it)
3. Senior Graphic Designer at Corbis. They fired the guy that hired me BEFORE I even started, then ignored me until I finally got laid off (YES!!!!) with a nice severance. Bottom line with that job: It sucks to feel like there is no point to your work. It paid great, but it made me sick with boredom and feelings of uselessness. Ghey.

Amen. $50 may seem like a lot until that one weird crash where you end up in the emergency room overnight, MRI and X-Ray costs, and the one-day bill is over $10,000. Yes, insurance covered it. $50/mo or $10,000?
How have you been able to live, let alone buy bikes for 2+ years without working without living at home?

I had alot of $$$ saved up :) Some crap went down with my previous employer and he had to write me a good sized check for his mistakes. I won't name names but the IRS was a big one.

Plus I live on "reduced rent" as my girl's parent's own the place we're in. The rent went up........but we're still way below market value for a 2 bedroom in Santa Barbara.

I paid $500 for an.........ingrown toenail :( Hurt like a mother too but my bro has the same problem and he's under my parents health insurance......and they won't cover it. That's how I know that one. It was the best $500 ever spent on my health though, I can walk now without pain!

The funny thing is after I saw the add.........and did all this interviewing another local credit union had a spot open, the same or similar benifits.....and was between $12-15 D.O.E. So I could drive to work.....with my 91 k1500 pickup that gets like 15mpg for $12 OR walk to work for $10/hr. It'd cost me $3.25 + per day to just drive to work, to wear and tear on the car and all that......I'll just walk.

I tried calling them yesterday twice and no answer. I'll try again earley Monday morning and see where I can get.
