Well me and my lame knee went to the Fat Tire Classic today to watch and root on a fellow teammate and Monkey........the infamous douglas!!

Doug drove in from Albany to race at the Root 66 series race at Winding Trails in Farmington. What a glorious day for a bike race! I think Doug told me that there were over 445 riders racing today. Not too shabby.

I took a few photos and thought I'd throw em up.

First off here's Doug getting ready at the start for his 30-39 Sport Class:

There was also a good contingent of single speeders at the race today and man some of them were blistering fast. The two guys who finished 1 and 2 in the single speed class were just unreal! They actually finished way up there among all the riders in the Sport class - they friggin hauled ass. So fast that I missed them with my camera when they came by me early on.

But I did catch these two SSers:

Man guys and girls were flying on this course - I'll let Doug comment on the course, but I suspect that a hardtail or even a rigid bike would have been the weapon of choice today.

Here's Doug coming up to the finish line after three fast paced laps (15 miles total). I think he did the fifteen miles in about an hour and half or so. Not too friggin shabby for early on in the season. You kick major ass Doug! Way to ride my friend! :thumb:

It was pretty fun cheering my friend on, and just soaking in the race scene. Lots of amazingly fast riders and all sorts of cool bikes from the latest and greatest to some old school Fat Chance Buck Shavers and Cannondale Ravens etc. etc.

Good stuff and mad props to Doug for a great race!

So how did Doug Finish ? did he Beat Tracey Montoya ? ( He was Kicking my Ass big time last year , but moved up to sport this year. )

I wish I could have made but family obligations got me .

I did manage to get in a 75 mile Road ride and got some great pics of free riders in Nam

It was a perfect day for a race, sun shining, warm but not hot

The course was 4.25 miles, definitely a fast corse, just a couple real small hills, no real tough technical sections, it was dry with the exception of one mud bog, lots of places to pass........and MMcG was correct, a light hard tail was the ride to be on (not that I was on one!)

my 1st lap went pretty good, I was hanging just a little bit back from the lead group, they were so many people racing it was hard to judge/keep track of the competition....but I couldnt hang with their pace, and began to fad. I had the cardio but I didnt have the legs.

I ended up 20th (out of 34).......those damn CT boys are fast!

It was cool to see MMcG (and thanks for cheering and taking pics!!), and I also bumped into several other people I know from the XC scene. A really nice way to spend a beautiful Spring day :D

Root66 does a really nice job putting on a race, they even had bands playing!
BUT I dont like the fact they let experts/pros preride the course the same time as us sport guys were racing, it makes it confusing, trying to figure if the people ahead are racers or just preriders, plus extra work having to pass those preriders. I think this is 1st place I raced at they allowed preriders on the course while a different class is racing

Hmm...that does seem weird. Pre-riders & different racers all at once. Good thing it wasn't a really technical course...there could have been some serious issues!

thank you sir MMcG!

Your area has a so many people into biking, seems every time I drive down there, I see tons & tons of people road riding, or parked at trail heads - I wish there were more locals in my area into riding

You should've seen the SMBA entrance yesterday. There were only 2 cars when we got there and 7-8 when we left. :thumb:

Man, our area is huge for cycling. Driving through town on the way home from skiing, MBC and I must have seen 20-30 roadies. It made MBC very jealous.

Definitely biggest field I have ever raced against, plus the other sport fields/age were also pretty big!

I think I would have 19th but I with .25 miles left, I had to stop to take a branch out of my derailuer (I think I picked up the branch when I was went wide to pass preriders)

not that I really care if I was in 19th or 20th, but I was chasing the dude that did get 19th for 1 3/4 laps!!
