I was at Supergo returning some parts I didn't need and saw the orange XP on the shop floor.
So I thought what the heck, hey I want to test ride that rig.
Mind you, my test ride was just though rough alleys and a construction lot.
I had them set up the shock to my weight and took it out.
The bike pedals really well. No bob on sprints. I took it to the construction lot to test out small bump compliance and it was better than I thought. It's not as smooth as old Giant AC with the RS Deluxe Coil rear, but not bad and smooth for a bike that doesn't bob. Took some easy some 1 footers and the bike was cush and plush on the landing, felt as smooth as the AC this time.
The paint is first rate. That orange is nice. In terms of the Supego claim that the X design is stiffer and stuff, I can't vouch for or against it because I am only 130 pounds and the only thing I can flex is a bendy flex straw. Construction and welds look nice. Only time will tell if these pupster are built strong.
Standover is high though, so all you short legged riders, like me, will have a tight fitting standover height. The Heckler has the bent top tube to accommodate for the taller forks that a 5 inch bike needs. But the SP has a straight tube and a taller fork. I typically ride an 18" XC frame, and the 18" Weyless SP frame was close for me. Would have been nice if they used a bent top tube like many of the other all mountain frames. I didn't think the standover would be an issue, but I wiped out on one of the turns where the soil was loose and had a close call.
Over all, I was impressed. No bob pedaling and the cush of a Giant AC on the one footers. Not too shabby. I returned the bike to the shop and went back to work.
I might consider one of these frames. My main choice is the Joker XC frame right now. I wish the XP frame had a longer history to see if any problems should surface.
