Gee they repress a natural desire (wired in by God if you're of that religious leaning) and are surprised that these guys are turning out to be deviants? No amount of praying will make an erection go away.......

well at least they weren't underage this time. So I guess we should consider that a step in the right direction...

True, but I guess from a systemic point of view this whole idea of priests being celebate indicates that the church fundamentally sees sex as something "bad". If in fact the general consensus in the church was sex with one's wife (in this case) was "good" then it stands to reason those who are priests could marry and engage in such activity. However, and I can't quite put my finger on it, there seems to be this concept that sex somehow takes away from a priests ability to perform his duties, implying sex is not a desireable trait for a "man of God".

Now, in 1st century Judaism sex between a husband and wife was considered holy and sacred. The act was what literally joined a man and wife together, and in those days the wedding cerimony started with the bride and groom getting busy, once they emerged from the wedding chamber the rabbi would say some stuff then the whole villiage would have a wild drunken party for about a week. There's a whole book of the Bible that talks literally about sex between a husband and wife, the English version is very sanitized but in Hebrew it was every explicit, and they speak of enjoying each other not to procreate but becasue it feels good. Young Jewish boys were not allowed to read it, it was the equivalent of finding your uncles stash of Penthouse magazines.

Once again I digress..........it's always fun to mess with the up tight Christians I know and tell them that oral sex is in the Bible, and not mentioned in a negative way.

Anyway, sorry for the rant.........I guess I just don't get the whole "sex is bad" deal from a Christian point of view ..........

When I mentioned the idea that celibacy was outdated because there weren't primogeniture concerns for the Church, a priest told me that I was missing the point, and that celibacy for catholic priests was intended as a sign of devotion to God and a detachment from the material, and that a priest who loved one person or family above all others couldn't attend to his duties properly.

And I was thinking, "Neither can a priest with his peter in a boy's pooper..."

But still, it kinda makes sense from his POV and I tend to think pedophiles become priests rather than the priesthood producing pedophiles; I'm sure it goes both ways, however.

I might argue they have missed the point (obviously.....:D). That "detachment" from the material / physical world is an awfully dualistic mindset and not something our Jewish forerunners would have held.

Well, I'm sure most of the guys repeating such ideas it aren't named Father Goldfarb... I can't think that you could look at the history and dogma of the Catholic Church and see much Judaic thought left in it. Not to say that's right or wrong, but still. Your own interest in and understanding of the roots of Christianity in Jewish thought is ironically radical.
