Mark, the Decemberists are kinda 'ornate pop' for lack of a better word...

That's a pretty good way to put it I think. Their lyrics have a literary bent that borders on the theatrical at times which I like. The eponymous songs off of their latest album, The Crane Wife, are based on a Japanese folk tale for example.
