Lots of stuff
Hey thanks bud, appreciate the intelligent reply.

I'm aware that I might have a one-off bad hub, but the seals are intact and I probably only get maybe 8 - 10 muddy rides a year. Nevertheless, the freehub has required stripping, cleaning and rebuilding several times to allow the pawls to properly engage. Buying replacement parts in Australia is more expensive than getting a new hub from overseas, so next time I get a wheel built I'd say I'll just ditch the thing and try something new.

For comparison, prices here in Aussie dollars...

Hope Pro II 150mm- $246
Hadley 150mm - $580
DT 440 - $249
King - Can't find a price on the 150mm but the 135mm ISO is $799

If only there was a class on trying to think before you type. Tard. Servicing is easy - just the intervals are ridiculous compared to offerings that cost half as much.

Bearings are pretty much fine, they seem to last ok. Just the freehub continually gets gunked up and starts slipping. Doesn't take long to fix, just very annoying that $100 hubs manage to have less issues than $400 hubs.

Thanks for the revealing response. I dont seem to have these issues, also revealing.

Neither do most Hadley owners, nor the owners of most brands of hub.

At the risk of being drawn into a debate on the merits of the brand, I'm simply stating my disappointment that a hub that costs so much, has given me many more problems than any other hub I've ever run. Given the many dedicated Hadley owners out there, I've probably gotten the .01% of their hubs that has had a problem.

I've gotta say that your insinuation that I don't know how to service a friggin hub is interesting, and certainly not the kind of assumption that anyone capable of rational assessment would make.

I think it's a little unfair that a few of you are calling toodles a "douche" and whatnot, when he's just being honest about a product that he owns and paid good money for. Perhaps it was unnecessary in this thread, but regardless, at least have some respect for his honesty over the usual "I paid $300 for this and therefore it's the best" mentality that usually reigns.

My personal experience with hadley hubs is summed up by what I quoted above. Yes they're okay, yes they engage fast, but they have much shorter service intervals than products that cost half as much.

My 108 was ticking away fine until I took it on its first muddy/wet ride. Next time I went to pull the bike out, the freehub had seized. Cause? Poor needle bearing lubrication job from factory, and poor choice of bearing for a poorly sealed freehub body in the first place. Sealed cartridge bearings would reduce the critcality of external seals, and maybe if they are going to use a fragile needle bearing, they should seal things better. If moisture didn't get in there in the first place, then the light factory lubrication job wouldn't have been an issue, so the fault lies more in the hub design than the hub assembly in my opinion.

Furthermore, the bearings didn't take long to become rough (again this is on factory assembly) however replacing them with off-the-shelf japanese cartridge bearings would net a longer lifespan. Finally, hadley are clearly the heavy cousin in highend hubs, as everyone else has switched to (or offer) aluminium freehub bodies (hope, king, I9, hugi, burgtec).

Personally I thought the freehub mechanism on the hadley was great - it had minimal drag, engaged fast, and sounded great. It was the most reliable part of my hub. But everything else was sub-par, and one thing many people forget is that great tolerances do not make a great product. A great design does.

Anyway that's my experience, and I've since switched to hope and have been running them for 2 years + on a few bikes over a few seasons. I ride in rain/mud a lot, haven't serviced any of them ever, the bearings are all still smooth. I don't know if I got lucky, but in my eyes, I just spent a whole lot less and ended up with hubs that I can forget about.

A Sunline "spoke protector" I suppose. It was on there when I bought it, and I will say it does prevent the chain from jumping off the big cog into your spokes. Mainly, it adds weight (important, needless to say) and no one else has one.

A good mechanic can also save your spokes :happydance:

Just got this:

Specs:
08' Demo 8 w/magnesium link
Fox 40 with 09' cartridge and Risse uppeer crown
CCDB w/ti spring
I9's laced to Alex Supra D's
Sunline stem and bars
XT cranks, derailuer, shifter and brakes
E13 LG1 w/taco

Was 37.8 lbs. with XC tubes and no pedals on it when I bought it. Now has DH tubes and of course pedals, but I haven't bothered to weigh it as keeping it light is not the first priority. Brakes suck, but the bike rips so far (only 2 rides on it so far).

Check mine out bro hahah I got a sick deal on it !

So far, I like it a lot. I replaced my older 888 with the Totem to lose some weight, and I really do not feel like it has compromised the bikes' DH "raceablity". I think the A2C is shorter than my old 888, and I really do not miss the 1" of travel. Some claim that single crowns will bump you around more, but I cannot say that has been my experience. It feels every bit as stiff as my 888, and gives the bike a quicker turning feel (subjective, I realize). I suppose if all I did was race, I might opt for a new 40 or Boxxer XC, but this is fine for me (i.e. slow and only races occasionally).

Wow, talk about good color scheme :cupidarrow:

I'd run it with a 215x63mm rear shock for a bit more DH Geo (190mm rear travel, but it won't be that big of a difference) :clue:
I love that frame. Its like a raw, bead blasted, color. Scratches in it are virtually impossible to see if there is no dirt in them. As for the blue, the 8 came on it and it had a 66 w/blue stickers. I spray-painted the shock guard and seatpost collar. I think I'm getting some light blue stickers made for the boxxer
