Netherlands braces for 'jihad'
ASSOCIATED PRESS | Anthony Deutsch

THE HAGUE — The Dutch government yesterday vowed tough measures against what a leading politician called "the arrival of jihad in the Netherlands" after a death threat to a Dutch lawmaker was found spiked with a knife to the body of a slain filmmaker by his radical Muslim attacker.

A five-page letter released Thursday night by the justice minister forced political leaders — including Amsterdam's Jewish mayor and members of parliament — to take on bodyguards.

The document, attached to the body of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, was titled "An Open Letter to [Aayan] Hirsi Ali," referring to a Somali-born member of parliament. She had scripted Mr. van Gogh's latest film, "Submission," which criticized the treatment of women under Islam.

Miss Hirsi Ali, who calls herself an ex-Muslim, has gone into hiding.

"Death, Ms. Hirsi Ali, is the common theme of all that exists. You and the rest of the cosmos cannot escape this truth," the letter said.

"There will come a day when one soul cannot help another soul. A day that goes paired with terrible tortures, ... when the unjust will press horrible screams from their lungs.

"Screams, Ms. Hirsi Ali, that will cause chills to run down a person's back, and make the hairs on their heads stand straight up. People will be drunk with fear, while they are not drunken. Fear will fill the air on the Great Day," the letter said.

"I know definitely that you, Oh America, will go down. I know definitely that you, Oh Europe, will go down. I know definitely that you, Oh Netherlands, will go down. I know definitely that you, Oh Hirsi Ali, will go down," it said.

Deputy Prime Minister Gerrit Zalm agreed with comments by other politicians who called Mr. van Gogh's slaying a declaration of Islamic jihad, or "holy war."

"We are not going to tolerate this. We are going to ratchet up the fight against this sort of terrorism," he said. "The increase in radicalization is worse than we had thought."

Among measures under consideration is an emergency law to enable authorities to revoke the Dutch nationality of dual citizens suspected of terrorist activity so that they can be deported.

Mr. Zalm said the intelligence service, which already has expanded since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, would receive more funding to help it monitor potential terrorist recruits.

The suspected killer in the van Gogh case, a 26-year-old Dutch-Moroccan national, was arraigned on six terrorism-related charges.

Mr. van Gogh, a descendant of 19th-century Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, was fatally shot and stabbed Tuesday while cycling down an Amsterdam street. The remains of the provocative social commentator and author, whose throat was slashed in the attack, will be cremated Tuesday in a public service.

The slaying is testing already strained relations between the ethnic Dutch population and the Muslim community. There are about 300,000 Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands out of a population of 16 million.

Mr. Zalm said talks were ongoing with Muslim groups over how to avoid a violent backlash against Muslims.

Arsonists are believed to have set fire to a mosque in the central Dutch city of Utrecht, police spokesman Peter Keijzers said. There were no reports of injuries.

Jozias van Aartsen, parliamentary speaker for the nationalist People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the second-largest party in the government of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, issued a statement that called Mr. van Gogh's slaying tantamount to a declaration of war.

"The jihad has come to the Netherlands and a small group of jihadist terrorists is attacking the principles of our country," he said. "I hope the Netherlands will now move beyond denial and do what is fitting in a democracy — take action.

"These people don't want to change our society, they want to destroy it," he said.

The terrorist threat left by Mr. van Gogh's killer carries the ideology of a terrorist movement, Takfir wal Hijra or "Repentance and Flight," which advocates isolation from what it calls the sinful world, Dutch press reported.

Chief prosecutor Leo de Wit said the suspected killer, identified only as Mohammed B., faces at least six terrorism-related counts, including charges of murder and "participating in a criminal organization with terrorist characteristics."

The suspect, wounded in the leg in a shootout with police, has refused to talk to investigators. He was arrested with a note in his pocket titled "Drenched in Blood."

Authorities arrested eight other suspects in Mr. van Gogh's slaying and are looking into any links between the suspects and foreign terrorist groups.

Two suspects were released, Mr. de Wit said yesterday. Six will be charged with conspiring to commit murder, he said.

Prosecutors said all are Islamic radicals of North African ancestry. Four also were arrested Oct. 23 on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack but were released for lack of evidence. Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner told parliament the four had contacts with a suspect in last year's Casablanca bombings.

Ok Im Dutch so Im supposed to know about this stuff. I'll try and explain the current situation but as it is very complicated Ill probably forget some things.
Generally it all comes down to this.

In the early sixtees there were a lot of Turkish and Marokkan people coming to Holland because they wanted to work here. Social security and stuf like health care are well taken care of so Holland was an atractive country for them to immigrate to.
The years went by and the immigrants didnt really integrate in Holland. They had a lot of freedom here to do whatever they liked like building mosk's and having special prayer rooms at school and at work. Nothing wrong so far I guess as long as everyone behaves and adapts in certain matters to integrate into the Dutch system.
Unfortunatly that didnt work out the way it should. Now this isnt completely their fault as the Dutch goverment has made a lot of mestakes in this part as well.
A lot of Turkish and Marokkan youth started to get involved in stealing and robbing, dealing drugs, horracing people and they had no respect for the Dutch rules and tradition's what so ever.
Now with the situation in the middle east there has been a lot of talk about Muslims and especially in Holland where the Muslim population is very big there have been quite a few people that have critisezed the Islam and the way young Muslims were behaving in Holland. Also there have been a lot of things that indicated terroristic activitys by fundamental Muslims (terrorists) preparing for attacks and bombings in Holland and other parts of Europe.
Theo v Gogh was one of those people who critisezed the Islam. He made a movie about women being mistreted and discriminated in the Islam and a lot of Muslims didnt agree with him.
This was the reason for a fundamentalistic Muslim to shoot him and slice his throat in the name of Allah. The nr of extreme fundamental Muslims in Holland is getting pretty big and untill now the goverment really hasnt done a lot about it.
After v Gogh being shot they have finally opened their eyes but I really think its a little late for that and everybody here is fearing for more critics of the Islam being murderd and terrorist threats in our country.
Muslims and a lot of other foreighners are blaming it on the Dutch now because we didnt accept them they are blaming us now for the fact that they have always been discriminated in Holland.
Theres a lot of hate these days here, you can feel it just walking down the streets. People staring at eachother and calling names. Foreighners hating on the Dutch and vice versa.
I really dont see anything improving any time soon. In fact I think things will only get worse.

If theres any questions Ill be happy to try and anwser them.

To make a long story short...
We really didnt do anything. Its just those fundamental Muslims trying to screw this whole world up. They dont care about non Muslims and their only goal is to shut us all up.
Lets just hope we can stop them before it gets out of hands...

I have to say that from my experience, and Its not a lot but I lived there for 6 yrs when I was young, the Dutch are actually a pretty conservative people. They just don't like to tell everyone else how to live so while not one of all the dutch people I know smoke hash or eat magic brownies and as far as I know, they don't hang out in the red light district, they just don't have an interest in sticking their nose into the business of the people who do want to.

I think that leaves them open to situations like this because it would be against their nature to really crack down on weird religions and such, until it comes to a head like now.

I still think we in America could learn a thing or two from them. Especially the religious nuts we have here. Learn something from the dutch and go to your own churches and leave the rest of us alone!

Ty, your impressions of NL are the same as mine after living and working there for 3 years (2000-2003). The dutch are tolerant, which is different from approving, when compared to other cultures. This characteristic however is what prevented them from seeing how radical muslims were not only congregating in NL but also actively resisting becoming a part of NL society with negative effects.

While I think their culture is far from perfect, the distancing of religious values from social policy would be a welcome change here.

This one pretty much tells the whole deal.
Its a shame that Dutch people are now placing bombs and and burning down Muslim schools and Mosque's as this will only lead to more hate.
Today the Dutch goverment made a start getting rid of extremistic muslims but they have allready found out it wont be a walk in the park.
Though the susspects have surrenderd they didnt give up without a fight.
A boobytrap was placed at the door of the building injuring 3 police officers, grenades were thrown and shots were fired.
There have been fights between muslims and Den Haag soccer holligans (which are the baddest in the country) and arrests were made on both sides.
Helicopters were hoovering above Den Haag all day and special forces and snipers were sent for backup. Even the army made an apperance.
Hope they will continue to do these kind of busts so them terrorists know we mean bussines.
Anyways moving to Canada has just become a lot more interesting...

This is not a surprise to me. Most of the European countries have been pretty liberal in letting Muslims immigrate. But now it's starting to bite them in the ass.

Muslims causing problems...not a big news flash to me.

in light of the below excerpts, we monkeys should come to the quick aide of the dutch:
"When I grew up, this place was spontaneous and free, but my kids cannot safely cycle home at night," said Mr. Konings, 49. "My son just had his fifth bicycle stolen."

Some cite a rise in antisocial behavior and a worrying new toughness and aggression ...in political debates

Its 'political incorrect' and the Dutch have anti-racism laws....
So if you say something like you said in public,
there's a chance someone sues you and you end with a $$$ fine.

Great isn't it.

Stolen bikes, violence, people suing for stupid reasons... The Dutch are turning into Americans!

Seriously though, even though I know I don't need to say it, it really sucks that countries like the Netherlands have tried to be open and helpful to people from around the world and then get bitten in the ass by some of those very same people. In addition to the fact that there are probably some pretty good immigrants there... you know... working hard, contributing to your adopted countries society, etc. I wonder how long it will be before countries just start banning all muslim immigration, or immigration if you are from certain countries.
