So I have been upgrading my bike over the past 5 months and I was wondering what part I should get next. I was thinking eithier a chris king headset or sram x9 rear derailler with rocket shifter. The sram would be upgrading a shimano lx rear rerailler and the chris king would be going in for a ritchey logic headset. Which one should I get?

A rootbeer bullit, size medium (that's the best size for freeriding.) You should also look at Maxxis tires because a friend told me they have stiff sidewalls.

i think you'll notice a bigger performance difference with the upgraded shifter and derailleur. That would be my choice.

NORCAL is the hizzle
I don't know why you would want to upgrade either unless your current parts are blown and not working, you just won't get a huge performance leap and you might as well save your money til you NEED a new rim, tires, chain and cassette, or any of the other dozens of little things that crap the bed from time to time if you ride.

Unless you have lots of money just lying around, I'd agree with Ripper.

The Rocket shifter you mentioned will not work with an X.9 rear derailleur. That shifter has a 2:1 pull as opposed to the 1:1 of the X.9 derailleur. Purchase an X.9 shifter for your X.9 derailleur :)

To beat the dead horse:

Save your cash for things you need. If your headset or derailleur dies, get a new one. Nothing wrong with getting a nice one, either.

The other thing to think about is consumable parts, like chains, cables, and housing. These things should be replaced on a regular basis, and often aren't. A lot of times, when your shifitng sucks, you think you need a new derailleur or shifter, when it's really your crappy $2, 1-year-old cable that needs to be replaced. Or you just need a new chain, etc., etc.

We all like to upgrade stuff, but do it for the sake of performance, not fashion. A CK headset, while a worthy product, and the first choice of many when building up a brand-new bike off a $2000 frame, isn't going to make your ride any better. However, that $20 replacement chain WILL make your bike ride better when you need it, or the $100 for the headset could be two new tires, or a substantial part of a nice new fork, or spokes and a wheelbuild when you kill a rim.

And you'll need an X-series shifter, not the Rocket.
