One of my buddies is getting rid of his '97 VW Golf, Trek edition. it has 110k miles, but is in really good shape. He is meticulous when it comes to taking care of his car. He just had everything replaced, timing belt, ball joints, and lots of other things I cant remember.

He's redone the exhaust system, stage 3 all the way back.

He is the second owner, has a carfax report, all the paperwork, and every receipt for all the work he has ever done on it. He used to build cars, and is incredibly anal when it comes to keeping things right.

He is selling it because he is moving and needs a 4WD truck.

I've ridden in it many times, and know he takes really good care of it, the only thing i'm a little reserved about is the 110k miles...

It comes with a Thule rack on top

he'll give it to me for 4 g's

Any thoughts?

Depending on the options it has, Kelly Blue Book has it listed between $3800 and $4500 for a private party purchase, so it sounds like you're in the ballpark.

i think that VW in general and jettas in particular get fairly low marks on reliability. oops, just saw it's a golf. i'd look around.

i took a few guesses and kelly's bluebook site spat out a number of $3300 for a private party sale in your area.

It does have some extra work done on it though. New exhaust, new racing clutch (1600 lb) nice air filter, air pusher thingy (I forgot what its called) and lowered an inch. The thing flies through mountain roads, and i've shuttled with it before, not to worried about that :thumb:

I had a '97 GTI that I loved. Things to look at for potential problems: wheel bearings, leaky power steering, ABS system, leaky hatches and the ignition coil thingys.

$3500 bucks max. Most cars with that kind of work have been beat, since it's a friend I'd say he should sell it for $3000-3500.

It's not a Jetta!
Plus, you stole that from me... :p
I have a '96, and man, that thing just kept on going, no matter what I did to it. 240 mile/day commuting for 9 months, didn't really keep as good care of it as I should have, so I back the GTI/Golf reliability.
I still have it, and at 130k miles, after the tuneup I'm about to get done to it, she'll be purring for quite a while longer...
Just my 2 cents...

You should deduct the cost of the mods off of the kbb price, not add them. Mods = its been driven hard. Kind of like the old saying (before they were so popular oem): "Never buy a used car with a turbocharger."

Thanks for all the input...... I dunno what I'm gonna do. I probably won't end up with it after all, but it is time for some new wheels. Anyone selling a truck really cheap? :D
