What happens when the coating wears off forks?

I have a 2001 z2 atom race and on some parts the bronze coloured low friction coating is starting to wear through to the silver alu underneath.

Has it still got a fair bit of life left or is it time to start looking for a new fork?

I'vre never even thought of that problem before. But, I'd say so long as you're not noticing and performance issues, ride it till it sh!ts the bed! Of course, thats my NON-technical suggestion.;)

It's no problem. Slightly more stiction (probably not noticable), maybe a little more seal wear. Possibly a little squeaking the first time you compress the fork on a ride. Just lube the seals and stanctions once in a while with some tri-flow and ride it until it breaks.

I just went for a ride and looked at it under a proper light and it's not worn through.

I think what happend is that riding it with mud on the stanctions all winter has left a lot of small light scraches where the mud is scraped off the tyre by the arch into the stanctions. Under a certain light it looks silver but actually only a few of the many scratches go right down to the alu.

I am hoping that they aren't bad enough to wreck the seals.

It happens to a lot forks with use. I think it's mainly caused by improper maintainance of the fork. Did you know you're supposed to change the oil every 100 hours of riding? You should also clean and grease the stanchions, and clean/check the seals while doing this.

Not picking on you, but I'd guess 98% of people don't properly maintain their fork.

I wouldn't worry about it at this point, I'd take it apart and clean/grease it, but keep riding it unless it spews oil or takes a plunge in performance.

Its caused mostly by a fairly big tyre and poor fork design. I can't do anything if 5 miles into a ride the arch starts scraping mud off the tyre and into the stanctions.

I was actually checking the oil when I noticed the problem. The seals are very good the oil was still clean so I didn't bother chaiging it.

Sticking the arch on the back of the fork looks like a good idea as it could have prevented the problem in the first place.

I tend to spray on some silicone spray every few rides but have never really found a good way to get stuff off the seals.

wouldnt greasibng teh stanchions/seals get inside and contaminate the open bath? if not what kind of grease should i use, also does the silicone spray affect teh seals?

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough, but grease the OUTSIDE of the stanchions and the inside of the bushings. The stanchions just slide in the bushings, the open bath is going on inside your stanchions. I always use SlickHoney for it, and not a silicone spray.

Yeah, they should work okay. I'd go with the judy butter as it was designed for this use, though for RS.

It's quite easy to take them apart, but I totally understand you not wanting to do it.

Just grease it, cycle them a few times (like your testing it on the showroom floor), and regrease, then wipe off the excess. It won't do as much as taking it apart, but won't hurt either. What you'd trying to do is get some grease in between the bushings on the stanchions and on the bushings.

Did you the same guy as D_D?
