Hey guys,

Quick ?...

What is the weight of a Evil/E13 SRS chainguide system?

I was just bored and curious. Tried the search function but didn't find anything. Found some info how to mount to Saint cranks etc....but nothing about weight.

If ya know I'd like to know :)

i state this comparing it to other guides that i has used-installed(it heavier). in the big picture though the weight difference will be small, it just weights more in proportion

If you need a chainguide you shouldn't be worrying about weight. And if you're that concerned with weight use it w/o the bashring and it will still keep your chain on.

I don't think he was worried about weight, he just wanted to know. And the e.13 is designed to work with their guard, it doesn't work as well without.

Yeah I just was curious what the weight of a SRS guide was.

I am not worried about how much weight it has, I am more concerned with protection.

I know the bashguard doesn't weigh a whole lot but the mount I think has some to it. I was just bored and curious is all :)

I'll PM dw and ask

OK a few answers.

First off, the SRS guides are actually pretty lightweight, and as far as bashring equipped chainguides go, they are just about the lightest available. I know they look heavy, and because they are so strong, people thing the guides are heavy, but chuck one up on a scale next to a competing guide and see for yourselves. The things are light!!!

The 40T SRS, with everything you need to mount it up to your bike including all bolts, ISCG mount bolts, etc... is 520 grams. This is 20 grams lighter than other unnamed guides that people try to drill out to get lighter.

The STS comes in at 475 grams

The SRS guide will not work well without the bashring. The supercharger is an integral part of the chainguide. Every part, every feature in the guide has a purpose. The SRS was developed using a ton of FEA (computer aided structural analysis) to remove any excess weight. It is designed to take a significant impact and still function, allowing you the rider to finish your race run sans mechanical. Its pretty unique in this aspect as far as chainguides go.

For bashring weight, the supercharger is lighter than two 1/8 inch aluminum plates in other guides, with a HUGE jump in strength and impact resistance. For 2005 we are injecting bashguards from a new proprietary plastic alloy caled Tuffmax. The new alloy is 12% stronger and more impact resistant than any other material available on the market. We alloy this material ourselves, so its not, and wont be available in any other bashguard.

As far as drilling out the Supercharger, its not a good idea. You will induce stress concentrations, and the guard may not last. Also, you would be lucky if you could get more than 50 grams out of it. Its just not worth it.

OK, so there you go, thats the straight scoop!

Have any here actually bought the Formula SRS chauinguide?

Will this also come with the new bash material?

Clear only on the Formula?

info as of this week from michael@e13 is that the formula will not be produced any longer (not sure if it ever was)

While light as hell and very Bling Bling, the carbon is just too expensive and isn't as bomb proof as the current SRS back plate.

One of the greatest benifits of the e13 guide is you can run your bike LOW to get great cornering performance and not risk any DNF's or mechanicals.

I have already removed 1mm of the back of mine, to make Middleburn arms fit.
If I should make it even thinner, I will take a litle for both sides.

Waterjet cutting should be ok for the boomerang, but how thick should it be?

humm, i wasnt really thinking about the backplate, just the bashring, im thinking if i go too thin, i still wont have chain problems and the superchargers cost way less than the backplate, actually the best way to cut weight on the backplate i guess is to run a 40t and cut off the unused parts like on the gemini specific boomerang.

i need to snap a pick of my guard. 2.5 ounces shaved and drilled out and that was only a tiny bit of what i waqnt to do to it. my bashgaurd also has 9 or 10 holes drilled in it and it feels noticably lighter in hand than a non-drilled version

Heh, you think that is bad? You shouls ask DW about the one he MADE me remove from my bike. 3 years on it, beat to hell, but i never dropped a chain! He finally confiscated my bike at Mt Snow to replace it for a shiny new E13 one.
:p

All this talk of cutting... even the weight weenie that I am would rather not do that. Don't cha like to be able to land on it? Take off too much around those mounts and you'll probably wish you hadn't, and see why Dave made it that thick. Drilling a few holes to allow mud to escape would be about the only thing that I think I would try, even then you arn't going to loose that much weight.

Unfotunatley all I have is a dremel.
:D

Ok this wasnt the easiest thing to photograph, clear guard, white surface, halogen lights and a bad camera..I mopved to my swanky office carpeting.

What's funny is you can see where the mud has completely ground the bashring almost smooth in some spots. The spot i shot (side that i ride with down) has about 1/4" missing. QUALITY PRODUCT!

Ya, stik was bitching about the wet stuff falling for 4 days straight. 0c i don't mind SO much, its the -20, - 30 and -40 that gets to me. I loved the boulder winter weather. Above freezing, and 5 feet of nice fresh pow int he backcountry, while i can still ride my bike on trails around boulder/golden.

Your bash guard will fail because of your modification.
