What should replace my crappy Hayes Nines?

I have a really crappy pair of Hayes Nines. I've tried loctite and so have two different mechanics at two different shops. NOTHING seems to work. I'm not asking for ways to keep the screw from moving. I'm fed up with these and just want to get new brakes. What are your suggestions. I need an 8" up front and a 6" in the rear. I don't want to, but I guess I could go as high as $200 per brake. Thats really pushing it though. Considering my friend just bent the boomerang on my new DRS. (So I gotta get that fixed)

So what brakes do you suggest?

Get 8" Avid Mechs with really nice cable and housing- nothing has better power or feel.

Not liking the Avids. Have tried them. Don't really like them. When ym Nines worked. They felt so much better.

I feel like I'm saying this a lot lately...but you could just get Mag levers for your current brakes. If not, get Hopes.

I was thinking mag levers. But on the subject of hopes. Mini's or M4's. I think the M4's are $215 though.

OT, but sounds like your friend owes you a DRS.

As for brakes, you can't beat Hayes mags for the money. You can pick up a set cheap on ebay. Or just buy new mag levers for you nines.

Yup. That's why they're so prevalent in the upper eschelon of the global race circuits.

The cheapest option at this point is mag levers. Even these will move though. Locktite and teflon tape both work and are cheaper than hope brakes.

The hopes won't have that problem will they? The leverage screw backing out I mean.

His solution was to kick it with his heel. Then told me to ride with it like that. Awesome idea I must say. He won't pay for a new DRS. I'm hoping I just need a new boomerang.

So $430 later i'm garanteed to have the best brakes possible. (With the exception of the 6's. Which are overkill for me.)

I have a suggestion on where to put the old boomerang

Yeah, Mike D nailed it, get the mag levers and use the extra money you would have spent on hope on a tranny hooker for your buddy the boomerang bender :o:

If I were to compare the Hayes with Mag levers to the M4's would there be a HUGE difference in quality?

i think first of all you have to employ a policy

you break it you buy it

if they dont want to obey this they cant ride youre bike its as simple as that

seriously if it was his fault he bent the boomerang he should replace it

Not sure if he posts here or not. But I doubt he'd ever pay for it. When he broke it he said I should have got the P.O.S MRP-LRP he's got. EVERYONE told me to go DRS over LRP. So I did. Now he breaks it and complains. He complains about my Hayes Nines not working. Well guess what its not your f*cking bike.

New Policy: I'm the only rider of my bike. That way: I break it, I buy it.

Plus, i've NEVER been the rider of my bike when somethings broken. He broke my derailer, my chain twice and now add the DRS to that.

Probably going Hopes.

Wow, sounds like you have a different definition of "friend" than I do.

There must be something wrong with my mind...

True story: His chian is over a year old and today I was riding and a bent link (put under stress) snapped. So being the good friend I am I fix it. Him and another kid take off to go buy sodas. Leaving me and my other friend fixing the bike. So we get it all finished and I put his chain break in my pocket. Not thinking of it. So then were riding back and pass them and me and my friend who helped me fix the bike go to get some drinks. Then as we return to the skatepark. He's trying to grind on my bashguard. It slips and he bends the chainguide into the rear tire and locks it up. After much kicking and stomping its sort of (retardedly) bent back into shape.

Then I take off for home to share the good news to my credit card (umm my mom). Then the kid returns home and gets online. Turns out his chain broke again a few minutes after I leave and I have the chain break.

After a little snooping. Do the Hope rotors only have the 5 bolt spider? Or is it possible to hook them up to a 6 bolt hub?

Stupid hope website. It was talking about a 5 bolt hub. I was confused. I figured it out when I looked at jensonusa.com but it was to late to delete the post. So if the LBS can get me some M4's thats what it'll be.

whoa whoa whoa... don't be so hasty.

yes M4s are sweet, but let's take a moment for some simple economics:
2 x hayes mag levers = $125

2 x Hope M4s = $430
- Sale of HFX-9s = $125
Subtotal = $305

Total Diff = $180
That's $180 spent so that your brakes have a slightly different feel. Now I'm all about subtlety, and I own both hayes and hope brakes, but for a youngster such as yourself (especially one who's "friend" breaks his bike a lot), I would save the cash. Hayes Mags work great, are powerful, reliable and easy to find spare parts for.

Spend the 2 big ones on a kickass keg party. If you're too young to buy a keg, spend it on drugs.

I'd stick with the Hayes, for money reasons mainly. But also because there seem to be so many problems with Hopes (sqealing, bad lever feel, and the annoying response of "you just bled it wrong, do it again, and again, and again....."). I was really close to getting some before my buddy got M4s, and I swear those things are the most noisy/annoying things ever put on a bike; even though they *work* I can't put up with the noise.

And I'm sure they're going to be more expensive than just a pair of levers. He's on a budget remember.

Looks they would be a nice choice if you've got the cash though!
I don't remember saying I was on a budget. I'm willing to pay $215 per brake (the M4's...) I'm on no budget. Getting the parents to pay for most of it.

Again: you'll have a lot more fun with $200 spent on drugs and hookers, than $200 on the difference between mags and m4s.
