EWG Report::Skin Deep

Wow, I guess I am just absolutely amazed at what companies will pass along to consumers under the guise of a completely safe personal care product. :nope:

Come on! A little corporate responsibility!

This is why I support animal testing :devil:
Not to start a new debate, but I don't think the point of the research was to promote animal testing for these dangerous chemicals, but rather to pressure companies from using them in the first place.

Just because someone has a website that ends in .org doesn't mean that they are creditable. I'm not saying that not legitimate Environmental Working Group organization. However, the article doesn't identify what chemicals are harmful, thus doesn’t justify their claim. Alpha hydroxy acid is one of the only “toxic” chemical listed in the EWG’s petition to the FDA. Accorrding to Stridex.com, Salicylic Acid is one of the product’s active ingredients to "exfoliate skin and help unclog pores to prevent acne lesions.” If 100 people died of Stridex pad poisoning then we have a problem. If the EWG's petition was released by Associated Press then I'll believe their claim.

The air we breathe and burnt bread we eat can cause cancer. It is websites like this that create too much panic among the general population. A lot of people don’t take time to research to see if these claims are true and if it is coming from a reliable source. Don’t believe everything you read.

P.S.

Hydrogen Dioxide, a tasteless, odorless compound kill thousands each year and you use it every day!

Just because some poor, skinny-a$$ vegan broke out after they used L'Oreal on themselves doesn't mean the chemicals are going to be harmful to the other 99.99999% of the population.

That group, methinks, has other motives....... they don't appear to be the bastion of objective truth. Environmental Working Group. Sheesh. :rolleyes:

Interesting and slightly related post.....

I have been doing some touch up on video for a documentary on the skin care industry... Had some info on sunblock come accross my Wacom... The main active ingrediant in most sunblock is a methooxyCINNAMATE. The way it works is a little scary... The compound penatrates the skin and forms a barrier. When rays from the sun hit the compound the molocules of the compound become excited :eek: and start to "shake around" . They absorb the waves of radiation and "burst" leaving behind free radicals. I know I dont have to go into what free radicals are or what they do, but the fact that this is happening on ALL the exposed surfaces of your body is kind of scary... That seems to be an awful lot of free radicals being introduced into your system. Of course no studies have been done about long term effect, due mostly to the fact that we have just realy recognized the problem F.R. create. There are other ways to block the sun, but they are physical barriers rather than chemical barriers making them "almost impossible to market to our female customers" As the Doc I was talking to stated.

Nothin worse than a bad sunburn though...least I've been told, never burnt myself... :thumb:

The EWG actually didn't really do any lab research on each chemical. What they did was compile a list of ingredients found in a lot of common personal care products, reviewed the chemical msds information and previous studies, and basically put together a nice site showing people what exactly is in a lot of things we put on our skin and how a lot of these constituents are very unhealthy for us/the environment/etc...all based on previous studies. BTW, you need to actually explore the site a little bit more because the site does identify the harmful chemicals and the products they're in...e.g. formaldehyde
