What trail bike tire casings don't suck?

Race version I presume? Funny you mention that, but my tires have had tons of superficial cracking throughout, yet I've experienced no torn knobs or significant leaking, although I top off pressure every week or so to be safe.

Not to be pedantic, but something seems off. Like there is accelerated moisture evaporation from rubber or breakdown of oils causing the rubber to crack. I've been wondering about presenting as a warranty issue, but haven't for 2 reasons. First is that the tires are working and haven't self destructed. Secondly, Michelin's website is les poo poo.
yes race. it's the only version they make for 26". not cracking, but actual slices from rocks and stuff. the corner knobs do seem to be wearing quickly, even for a race compound. what tire sealant are you using?

Probably dry, although historically when I go there in mid-October they've just gotten the first 1 or 2 rain showers since spring time. If it actually rains while we're there, speeds will reduce so pressures can too.

Anyone have some real time on the new Magic Mary? Every time there's a change I hear that they finally will keep lugs for a while...than I hear or experience nothing has changed.

I have pretty good results with the prior version 27.5 x 2.35 in SG Addix Ultra soft and am currently on a 29.0 x 2.40 SG Addix Ultra soft, no signs of tears at the tread blocks. Both at the front and on my pedal bikes, '16 Reign and '21 Titan.

I had no problems with the previous 2.35 keeping lugs (Ultra Soft, Super Gravity) and ran them as a front tyre pretty exclusively for the past couple of years. The new 2.4 is apparently a decent whack heavier for some reason but I haven't run one yet.

i burned through a set of the current 2.4 MM / bigbetty super gravity ultrasofts last winter. great soggy weather grippers, no durability issues (apart from typical soft rubber wear). burly sidewalls (stouter than DD's), and a weight to match - 1400g 29'ers.

Bean hammering the new MM in soft and ultra soft super gravity, a set of super trail, a big Betty soft in super gravity...
Lots of rocks, resorts, jump park, all out hammering and been getting bike low 2 wheel drift pushes...

No lost lugs
No tears and rips from bad manufacturing
Sidewall has taken a ton of abuse and survived rock gashes

I have zero issues with them, my rear on the 951 has seen a crap ton of abuse...it's still going strong...I just rebuilt a new rear wheel and stuck my used magic mary on since it's still going....

Love this tire:
I have ripped at the sidewall, laid lugs and started to rip into the side wall lugs...etc ...this back tire has gotten it's ass handed to it...
I don't brake and skid or brake to drift...tire is predictable and when it drifts you know where it's at...

Holy crap - What do their DH casings weigh? Wish they did the Ultra soft in a Super trail casing or something.
DH casing is lighter according to real world weighing on a reliable scale:

Super Trail would be a good idea unless it's even heavier :homer:

Or you know - left the old awesome 2.35 Ultra Soft Super Gravity untouched... :rolleyes:

That would be the best idea but than there would be no progress... oh wait...

I weighed a ST Magic Mary 29 to be 1230g and a ST Big Betty 29 to be 1257g. So not heavier than SG, but basically as heavy or heavier than DD.

I don't mind DD weight. They don't seem to do the Ultra Soft compound in anything but Super Gravity or DH casing though.

Mine are all 27.5 weights but here's the list I've got of what I'm had the past 18 months or so.

Hans Dampf SG 2.35 - 1070g
Magic Mary SG 2.35 - 1160g
Magic Mary SG 2.4 - 1373g
Big Betty SG 2.4 - 1220g

Assegai 2.5 DD - 1230g

Beats me what other changes they made when they went from 2.35 to 2.4 on the Mary but its ~200g heavier than it used to be.

I currently run a MM SuperTrail 27.5x2.6 soft compound in the front and while the tire is not as awesome and grippy in the slop as her SG/Ultra Soft sister, it is still pretty good and durable and around 1180g IIRC.

How are people finding the 2.6 stuff?
I was tempted, but stayed away after my experience on 2.8's which I did not like.
So far as I have noticed,, it seems to be mostly the younger lighter riders that are on them locally. So does body weight or the stick up the ass of the aged play a role?

At this point DH is 2.5 Assguy and 2.4 DHR2, trail is 2.4 DHR2 and 2.4 Dissector.

I have no interest in 2.6. I think Maxxis’ 2.5WT DHF is already too balloony, though the Assegai seems to be narrower.

Off topic, but they should make a proper 2.4 DHF imo. I’d love to try that with a rear Dissector for mellower trails.

My go to is a 2.5 Assegai front and 2.4 DHR2 rear, though I’m on a sale priced Butcher rear at the moment.

Yep, if your going 2.5 and up you might as well try to get the beefiest casing they come in to get a bit more sidewall support to counter the ballon factor.

Most the 2 6 or bigger seem to have thin bouncy casing shorter knobs and harder compounds. I too prefer 2 4 tires the Assegai is really a 2.4.

I tried the 2.6 Butcher & Eliminator, and they were too round for my tastes on 30mm internal rims. I also think I generally prefer about 2.4, with well-supported side knobs for edging on off-camber.

S goes through the 3C Maxterra pretty quickly, it's the side knobs that just don't last out back.

Did a high speed, rock infested 30 min descent on EXO+ (Assegai & DHR2) with Tallus inserts running 21 psi rear, 19 front yesterday. Traction and control was unreal, felt like I could do no harm and the trails were bone dry. It was like magic. Same trail where I doubled flatted running slightly more pressure but no Tallus.

Inserts were doing their job, never felt the rims, buuut the EXO+ sidewalls just barely survived. Some big gashes in the rear that are weeping sealant.

So DD or DH casings going on soon, the light weight casing + insert experiment has failed. :(

I found that to be the case too. Though I blame it on the exo+ using a 120 tpi casing. I was in the process of testing out whether a reinforced 60tpi casing tire might work better when I had my accident. Testing will resume next spring/summer. I was giving a 2.3 Specialized Butcher in the Grid Trail casing a try on my rear wheel (w Tannus tubeless insert). It seemed to be working fairly well when paired with the 2.4 exo+ dhr2 in the front. (Though the 2.3 spesh is wider than the 2.4 Maxxis, fwiw)

DD in those tires with incerts work well for me in rough trails and at the bike park.

I just ordered utra soft and soft to run front and rear till it dries out. They're noticeably faster than Assguy/DHR2 combo.

After spending seasons on DHR IIs and Magic Marys, I have tried the Gen 3 E13 TRS Mopo "Trail" tires last season and I was amazed by everything. The trail version is around 1050g and I never had a cut or flat tire even riding in sharp rocks all the time. Altough one could say I care about my rims so I'm riding pretty smooth. I'm using Cushcore Pro in the back with 25 psi (22psi front) for what it's worth.

The Mopo compound is really grippy and wore much better than expected. The durability seems pretty on par or even better than Schwalbe's Addix Soft, but the grip is much better. No knob squirm either, no weird channel transition to the side knobs, great grip and very reasonable rolling resistance. Plus they can often be had for cheap (like 50$us retail for the Mopo on Jenson or 72$cdn in Canada). The sidewalls on the ones I have are a bit porous and weep sealant in 3-4 spots, but I'm not losing pressure any more than with other tubeless tires I've recently used (using WPL sealant) so I don't care and it didn't give me any trouble.

They also have the LG1 version which has burlier sidewalls for only like 50-100g more per tire. It hasn't been worth it for me so far, but if weight isn't a concern, I'd suggest the LG1 version since the Trail sidewalls get used up when rubbing on rocks.
