Damn, that's unlucky. It used to be that if you stole a loaf of bread here you'd get free passage out to Oz. Now you just get sent on adventure weekends.

Oz is on my short list of possible N8 habitats... I could over look the socialized aspects of the Aussie gov and the whole driving on the wrong side of the road bit, for the right mix of hot babes and 4 wheeling opportunities.

That's not what I said genius, I merely posed the hypothetical "fixed income" based on what Alexis was saying. If you can get a good enough job (that pays in US dollars, IMO), then you can live nicely anywhere.

My point is that you could make a decent living as a mechanic (or even a miner :p ) in the US, but I bet your quality of life would be different if you were living on the wages of a Peruvian miner. That's all. Hell, you never know; I might even have actual first-hand experience to base my opinion on

All things considered, my opinion is that the best place to live is the US.

well, i guess i did not put my point right.

my point is, if your only capital is your labor, the best thing to do, is to go where the wages are the highest. obvious.
so if you are gonna work for somebody else, then the 1st world is the best way to go.

if your income is generated thru capitals other than your labor, then cheap places to live are the way to go. since profits are even a bit higher than in the US, since labor is very cheap.

So, if you have a 20% anual return in SA, on a medium sized joint instead of in the US. your money is worth a whole lot more.
what is considered a medium sized capital in SA, is peanuts in the US, so its
not big enough to make it very profitable if you account the higher fixed costs of the US.

plus you generate a few job opennings in a place where a lot of people need a job.

yeah, the US is a nice place. But it has much higher costs, which are not in terms of dollars only.

and after economics, if you price what it costs for you to live in a big city with lots of stuff to do, year round dh and surfing, against how much would that costs in the US.

and yeah, i lived in the US, i know its nice to feel like the universe was designed around your zip code, but overall, after trade offs, i think i get a better deal down here.

so yeah, if you were to be a miner, 1000x better to be a miner in the US. if you were going to be a mid size business owner. 1000x better here since for the same capital, your return will get a much higher standard of living here.

Old movie reference.

I too am a fan of Australia. Never been there, but my office does exchanges and ambassadorships to Sydney, so it's a possibility. I feel kinship with any nation that wholeheartedly approves of it's national women's soccer team putting out a topless calendar as a fundraiser. And they're always talking about "the Bush." Sweet.

Werd. Most of the jobs I can get are in Nashville too. They just don't pay well. By the way I grew up in Buffalo. Probably the one place even more ****ty then New Jersey. Quite possibly the ****tiest place in the US.....jdcamb

Dude, the thing about Nashville is that you dont need much money to live VERY comfortably. You can buy a tits house for $150,000 that would destroy anything in NY of similar price. Nice girls (if you're into that kind of thing) bad music, decent riding (year round) and best of all...well...i dont know of anything really good, but its cool. Thats where I grew up mostly.

Tell me more about the girls. I got one here I would seriously consider leaving behind  I like 'em real slutty too. I know Nashville well enough. Got friends there to. Just a matter of getting of the pot and doing something about it. I got balls as big as my head for most stuff. Just moving is kind of a scary proposition at this point in my life. Would you promise to ride with me once a week? j/k ....jdcamb

Well, I cant guarantee you tail, but picture this. EVERY waitress downtown at every one of 100 live music bars is herself trying to be a big country music star. There are seriously hundreds of them from all over the country just looking to be noticed. Not all of them will freely admit it, but its the truth. These girls are lonely and hot.
Oh, and I live like 4 hours from Nashville right now, but I may be going to school there next semester, so Id ride with you for sure. What kind of work do you do?

Can we just do a quick sweep of people's professions? Not that I want (some of) you over here, but I am currently job searching myself right now - I'll post wages for each of your jobs over here in NZ. We are gagging for IT and Economics grads right now, as well as tradespeople.

hey toshi, i was actually looking forward to moving back to the US. there is certainly something to said for the great conveniences of US living, and the fact that stuff costs a ton less than in most of the western european countries. and the weather's generally better. that said, the myopia of the average US citizen is a tad disconcerting, as is the fundamentalist movement.

btw, i'm a chem eng by schooling, and have been involved in biotech for 15 years (either manufacturing or engineering).

well, when you consider that toronto is the mediterranean of canada...

actually, i could live in/near vancouver, but aside from geographic details, you've got the socialized medicine and high taxes to get yr head around.

new zealand would be a cool place to live (at least the 3 weeks i spent there was really great), but it's pretty far frickin' away from everything else on the globe, so you'd hardly ever see any friends from a pre-kiwi existence. australia would be a similar fate, but still a pretty great place to live.

you are fairly fortunate in that your field makes it easy to move around if you want to (i'd imagine). emigration can be quite tough.

Sorry Burly, In NZ you're not worth too much, although with a Journo qualification, you would definatly be able to get a job. Of course the nice thing over here is the gap between rich and poor is much smaller.

Once you become a Doc you can get a job anywhere in the world, but in NZ you would be looking at probably NZ$70-100K for a GP role. I don't know how much specialists earn.
