You would have a pick of jobs. NZ is crying out for people like you right now. How old are you then? I've seen Senior Network jobs for NZ$50-80K, dependant on the size of the organisation/responsibility etc. Once you get into large dept. IT management you can easily clear $100K.

DONT COME HERE, but you probably could get a job in either Aulkland or Wellington pretty easily. Both are undergoing considerable fast growth and the local paper (Wellington) has two pages of jobs in and around construction. The best paid are $35ph (about NZ$65-70K). There are no DoD type jobs that I can see for comparison.

Software Development/WebApplication Development (got a degree in Digital Cartography and GIS but I never used it) ;)
Again, you can have your pick of IT related jobs. There are nearly 800 programming/software development jobs in Wellington alone right now. It's a bloody pain trawling through them all I can tell you. Pay is typically high but capped at around $65-70K unless you are independant. You can go higher once you move into project management. Alternativly, I have just seen a bunch of GIS jobs, most are lower paid,($40-50K - still not bad) but come with benefits like you get to be outside alot, or do something really interesting.

Sorry, not much for you right now. I think this industry is declining even. Oh wait, I got a couple of 'proper' engineering jobs, but they are for apprentices. There are loads of Civil engineering jobs though.

Ah, tonnes of Business Analyst jobs. Some are really highly paid. If you've got a bit of experience you could earn a lot of cash. I got one here for $85K but it's pretty senior.

Can't actually find any Biotech jobs right now. Sorry. I guess there must be some though. I don't think Biotech is big over here...

Things would have to get really bad (yes, MUCH worse) for me to leave the US, and really REALLY bad to go any further than Vancouver. I might do a year or two in Sydney, but I'd come back.

I supose I should just give you some idea of the range of pay and what it buys you over here - A job like a shop assistant, cleaner, basic unskilled, low responsibility stuff will pay around NZ$20,000. That is the 'effective' minimum wage, I don't think I've even seen jobs advertised for less that that money. For $20K you could still get a small flat in the city, or a house in the burbs to rent. Like I said, the difference between rich and poor is way closer here.

I earn around $40-50K and so does my wife, and we live in a sweet pretty central appartment, drive an SUV, go out for dinner way more than is healthy and life is good. I'm going Skiing tomorrow for the weekend. :D I love NZ!

At the top end, there are very few people who earn over $120K, (apparantly a lot of sales people do) and this buys you whatever you want.

Just for interest - Weekly shop for food - $100-$150 for 2, mostly fresh produce. Steak and lamb over here rule so badly. $5 for a perfect surloin steak! mmmm steak...
Petrol (Gas) - $1.20 a litre, Diesel $0.85 a litre. Loaf of quality bread $2. Can of Coke $1.50. Second hand late model SUV $10-15K. Rent (per week over here) from $80 for a room - I pay $380 for a really nice 2 bd. appt, spa bath, underfloor heating, amazing view. This is pretty high end. We decided to get a pretty nice place as we both work from home so I probably pay above the odds for my income. You can of course pay as much as you like.

That's so unfair. My ideal (but reasonable) 1br place here in SF would have run me $1800 US... I'm not staying in my ideal place. That same place sold as a condo would probably go for around $700k US.

Too bad I love this city.

Are you in Auckland or some place more rural?

NZ$380 Per week, Yes. About NZ$1600 per month which is (www.xe.com) US$1080.

I live in Central Wellington (Which is the Capital City, and the second largest in NZ)

The view out of my Lounge Window as of right now (12.52pm, Saturday)

Wellington.

I lived in SF too for a while, I loved it as well. In a lot of ways Wellington is a really similar city. It has a similar vibe, similar retail mix, it's a bit smaller - You really can walk everywhere. Also a lot of it is on hills (although the CBD is flat, like SF. I used to live on teh corner of Haight (sic?) and Divisadero, right by the Phuket Thai :) - about two door up the hill. Man that was a cool time.

You just described Whistler Village... Well, the cost of living is low for me (UK wage x3) anyway. I guess its a little steeper for US.
I was thinking the same thing. And if you lived in pemberton or squamish and could suffer a 35 min commute through a mountain it would easily match low cost of living :)

I'm seeing what I can do to turn my student visa when I exchange to Stuttgart into a permanent one. Too bad I don't have any money.

I'm hoping my gf's expatriate German mom can get her citizenship back. Could provide some inroads into EU citizenship.

Still pretty cheap compared to Australia. What are house prices doing round your way? Up 28% over the year in Perth.:hot:

Yeah, some areas of Welly have gone up similarly, I think some of the more desirable suburbs have gone up up by 35%, but just very recently there has been a tiny slump in a few of the overpriced areas. Rural seems to be still growing, but way way more slowly. We recently also had a bunch of record prices in the CBD. Some tiny 1-car run down parking garage went for $70,000 or something ridiculous.

Is this like CNC machine programing? Absolute screaming shortage of these..... most companys have given up even advertising for people as they just don't get replys.
You'd be looking around the $35-40 per hour mark.

For that kind of money, no wonder there's a shortage... they might want to step it up a little......

I think it's almost got to the point now that the OECD countries, especially the English speaking ones, are so gagging for professionals that they'll roll out the red carpet for anyone willing to relocate.
Toshi, if you're willing to go to rural Australia, they'll send you the visa before you even ask for it. Globalisation I guess.

Once you become a Doc you can get a job anywhere in the world, but in NZ you would be looking at probably NZ$70-100K for a GP role. I don't know how much specialists earn.

The missus is the senior resident ENT surgeon at welly hospital and that pays around the 180k from what I gather.

Just kidding. Don't answer that question. :D

Emmigration: Thought about it... I'd love to live in other countries and really expierence different ways of life before making a decision as to where I would go to permanently. But for what it would take to make me say "to hell with this place" and leave permanently? Loss of voting rights. The day any one group (except criminals) loses the right to vote, I am outta here.
