This isn't a rant or anything. Just a question. It's time to replace my Double Walls that I got about 3 years ago. (Before any metal fatigue warnings start, I only put about a season and a half on them). I'd like to get another pair to replace them cuz I love the way they feel, but I had heard that Azonic had changed the dimensions at one point? Something about how the bars made before felt great but the new ones felt crappy. I guess my question then is if anyone knows the story or dimensions of old vs. new Double Walls. Help me "Pimp My Ride" :D

the sweep is very similar to the old azonics and they're stronger/lighter to boot!
Thanks for the heads up!

I just remembered - aren't these bars supposed to have a 5 year warranty? Meaning I could feel relatively safe getting another season out of em? I just race DH, no stupid big hucks and <12 races a season.

Yeah dude, I've been running my Azonic PDW bars for about 3 years now, and they're still going strong. If I had to replace them, I'd either get Easton EA-70s or Answer ProTapers, but, at the moment, there's no real reason for me to get new bars. My guess is that you don't need new bars either.

The Double Walls do have a 5 year warranty, but you still might want to swap 'em out. I replace my ProTapers every year, even with their 2 year warranty just to play it safe. Azonic did change the sweep of their 2.5 bars a few years back, the 2.0s are the same as they've been since they dropped the old bend in 2000 (the old bend was HORRIBLE, they actually dropped down in the sweep unless you had them rotated ridiculously far forward). Doublewalls are sweet bars, but the Eastons recommended and Protapers offer about the same strength with reduced weight. I prefer the sweep of the ProTaper to the Doublewalls (I ran DW bars from '99 through '01), but that is a totally subjective thing.

Does anybody know the actual rise heights on Easton EA-70 bars? All I can find is low rise, mid rise, and high rise. Anybody got some numbers for me?

i think ea70/protapers are 1, 1.5 and 2 inch rise.
Oh, and i love my doublewall's (similar to protapers/ea70's, but i still like the azonics way more)....

I think the 2" is more like 1 1/2". I just got an EA70 and have been riding Azonics for the last 7 years. I'm still trying to get used to the feel of the Easton's and right now still perfer the feel of the Azonics.

Yeah, the Easton bars measure about 1/2" lower than they actually list on the box (ie, the 2.5" rise measures the same as the 2" Doublewall or Protaper). That's why they just say high, mid, low these days.

I loved my double walls for a while. I noticed one day they were bending so I replaced them. The pair I got lasted about two weeks and they bent so bad that you couldn't tell it was a handlebar. Replaced that set and figured it was my fault. One day at platty took care of them as well, they started bending slowly and after a crash were done. They never snapped(thank god) but I won't ride them anymore. I picked up a set of cheap azonic world force bars and they have taken twice the abuse the double walls did.

Awsome feeling bar but if your really tough on equipment I'd look at something else.

Should I get the pyramid double walls or double walls?

Is there a difference?
I used DW on all my bikes up until this year, now only my trail bike has them. However they still are great bars, if your worried about weight and brake lever/shifter position go with the DW.

the pyramid has a stupid design that doesnt allow you to get the controls far enough inwards for many people, plus the part where one tube enters the other is prone to failure (ive seen 3 break clean off there).

if you like one finger braking the definitely stay away from the pdw

Azonic has changed the bend on the Doublewalls three or four times since the bars came out in '98. The only bend I've ever really like is the latest 2" rise bar. The 1.5" has too much sweep for my wrists and the 2.5" is just too tall. The problem I've had with Azonic bars is that all of them, not just the Pyramid, have limited room for lateral adjustment of your controls. Even the 2" DW I ran for a couple of years gave me trouble trying to get my shifter far enough over to run my levers where I wanted. The bend of the bar occurs pretty far out on the bar, limiting the movement you'll have for your clamps.

I've been running ProTapers on all of my bikes since early '02 and I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.

I ran into the same problem with the 2" rise double walls...hated that. I've been running a 2" rise World Force for 2 seasons now and still love it b'c of the upward sweep and it's got plenty of room to slide my levers in "1 finger style". I have 2 Doublewall risers that are literally brand new that I'm not using. Color "polished", 1" rise and they don't have the clearance issue of the 2" rise bar...they are both for sale for dirt cheap if anyone's interested :D

$30 each....heh heh....
