What's the deal with not working on Passover?

We have one of our application techs out on vacation today and tomorrow, I didn't realized it and paged him for a job he left unfinished. He basically said that there was no way he was going to work on Passover and would be in on Monday.

So are people just not allowed to work then or what?

Passover, all the feasts for that matter, are considered Sabbaths........the whole thou shalt not work deal in Exodus.

It depends on how the feasts fall in our calendar as to when the Sabbath for that feast is.

The hospital I work in is Jewish. The official holiday calendar is considered "moderate" by Jews here. Tomorrow (friday) is the only offical day off. With that being said, some of the more orthodox folks here take off from Tuesday through the weekend.

It's all about the religion. It's like asking - What's the deal with not working on .....Christmas, or Easter Sunday, or Laylat al-Qadr. If you were not very religious, it would be no big deal, but if you were very religious, you would not imagine working that day.

I just thought it was strange, he seemed pretty pissed off that I even paged him. Which isn't all that strange because he acts like a dick most of the time anyways. (He is one of the specialist nerds that acts like he is better than others because he knows something they don't.)

I was mainly just suprised at his reaction.

I'm surprised that he answered the page. If I was observant enough to take time off of work, I certainly wouldn't answer the phone. Granted, I'm not sure if the 'rules' of Shabbos apply as strictly to Passover as to Shabbos itself.

I just watched that again the other day. Too bad it was on Comedy Central during the day and completely butchered.
