hows everybody's racing goin?

tony seems to be the only one posting results, so here it goes.

Race 1: 35 degrees Fahrenheit, snowing, very muddy and slippery. Only have to do 2.5 laps b/c of the weather, rather than three. get about 2/3 through the half lap (first) take a wrong turn, go back, disk brakes give out in the back so i come around for the lap and pick up the other bike (legal in this series) , losing five minutes to change pedals. Get going, five minutes later, brakes are gone again, not broken, just all muddy (V-brakes).
finish: second of three

Race 2:get there get ready, realize i left the clif shots at home, except for one. figure i can go without them till i run out of energy, which is usually 2.5 hours or so into a ride at racing pace. I guess i didn't warm up enough or eat enough or something b/c i bonked about the middle of lap two(of three) Westy saw me bonk :D . Come around for the end of the 2nd lap in second, shortly after that i get passed by the kid behind me. My dad got a power gel for me from the people that i know from races last year, take the gel, go, finish 3rd of four.

Race 3: Get there an hour early, watch teh beginners start, preride in flat pedals. get back to the car and realize i forgot my shoes. find a pair of 12's i can borrow, then 11's, then finally 9's (close enough to a 10). change out the pedals get ready to go. race starts on about 3/4 mile of pavement. go into the woods in 2nd or third. about 1 mile into the woods, my front tire slips on a root and my bar hits a little tree. me and the bike almost part ways, but i managed to hold on. get up, nothing broken on me. Front brakes undone on the bike chain comes off the ring and got all twisted around. fix it. gone. everybody passed me. i pass four people by the end of that lap, next lap i catch up to the person in front of me and my chain comes off the little ring again and goes off (later i found out i had messed up the limit screw in the crash.) try to catch up again for the rest of the lap, but i never do, i finish 2 minutes behind him and get fourth.

No offence but what kind of races are these taht you're able to change bikes and pedals and fix brakes and still end up in second. Damn racing sounds easy for you guys. If i pop a tires thats it for me. I'll fix it but will end up like 15 out of 50

it's not easy, believe me.

when i did beginner last year, i'd been mtbing a lot beforehand, and i was probably the fastest out of the people i rode with, and i got my ass kicked my first race. by the time the season was over, i was a lot faster and got third overall. this year i moved up to sport. It's a lot faster than beginner, im going sometimes all out for the first lap.the bike changing thing is legal, since it's not norba, my parents have the bike out and ready with a pedal wrench in their hand in case anything happened through the lap.Oh, and people can also give us power gels etc.

this is not a small series in the least though. so far this season(started late march) Jeramiah bishop and chris eatough, both trek factory pros, have come to races.

Cool good luck on the rest of the season.

Personal observation #1. You should have your equipment dialed in, adjusted and prepped not later than the night before. You shouldn’t "upgrade" major parts or even really minor for that fact, no more than a week out. (no changes the week before the race.)
Personal observation #2. I have a gear bag that everything goes in the night before. I visualize the race and lay everything i need out on the floor and then pack it. Gu, bottles, shoes, clothes, tire patches, multi-tool etc. Dont rely on the transition area to get your through the race be prepared.

Ok enough of that. Sport in my class is just an extension of what beginner was for me. We've got some wicked fast people and their training HARD. the first lap is similar to beginner pace, but more, just assess and elbows. When i get into the second lap the traffic is mostly cleared out and i can settle into my pace. I do have to remember to keep "pushing" and not slow down. We average 20 miles per race.

How far are you guys going?

Way down south
For the race that has been the biggest in the southeast for years, attendance has dropped. Sea Otter conflict didn't help, but racers are also getting tired of the NOC and their poor payouts. As an expert master finishing between 2nd and 5th for 5 straight years now, I haven't even won enough $ to pay the entry fees over the same time frame! Ridiculous. Anyway, many of us did show up this year...

Western NC has had a lot of recent rain, and locals reported bad mud all week. Even by Friday, it was still occasionally raining and quite muddy. Races there run Sat (Pro/Ex and women) and Sun (Sport, Beginner, Clydes, and Singlespeeds)...decided I'd race both Ex and SS this year as they were different days. By Sat, the weather was warming up and the sun was out. The Pro/Ex men ran at 3:30pm, so the course improved all day. We started out very fast up the opening road climb. With 2 of the past 4 national champions in our class, things were cooking. 2/3 of the way through, I was 3rd before the aforementioned former champs...and then the wheels came off (figuratively speaking)...lost a lot of ground and 2 places, limping in in 5th place...thinking of taking up cross stitching or something equally dmanding! Just couldn't make any power the last 10 miles, and felt like crap. Great food and friends made up for a lot, though.

Sunday am...SS at 10...starting behind ALL of the sport racers...arrgghhh! We had a bit longer starting stagger, approx 6 min or so. And off we go...a semi-pro whom I coach set the pace, and decided to rip all of our legs off. I backed off, and was 6th as we hit the singletrack a few miles into the race. Rode fast and steady, gradually picking off riders, until there were 3 of us together dueling for 2nd place. The semi-pro beast was GONE...then we dropped one of the three...and then the two of us found studly semi-pro on the side of the trail with his pedal having fallen off! He had swapped pedals from his geared bike that am and didn't crank it down enough. For the next 45-50 min it was back and forth with another guy...he'd pass on the climbs, I'd bring him back on the high-speed sections. We traded the lead several times, with my taking the lead with a couple of miles to go. We'd been picking off sport guys (and frequently getting held up...passing with a SS is no fun when you run out of gear and can't generate enough speed!) all day...as we got close to the finish, it was clear it would be a sprint...and I saw two sport guys just ahead. I dialed up to full sprint BEFORE the closing chute, and cleared the two sport guys...tucked, spun out to the finish, and took the checkered flag!!! My close competitor hadn't jumped early enough to get around the sport guys when I did, and couldn't close it back up.

The most amazing thing about this, is that over the sections we ran in the SS race, I was faster than I'd been with gears the day before...and I was tired for the previous race. I've been working on a singlespeed specific training regimen and it really is doing it. I'm more fired up for SS racing now than fast-old-guy racing!

Here is...Texas?

Hey, are you close enough to do the Arkansas SS championships? That is memorial day weekend, and we're going to make the trip over there. I remember seeing some TX people talking about the Oauchita Challenge last month...so obviously some folks get to AR...I never had a desire to visit there before....sorry ARMtnBkr, nothing personal!

Not really it's a pretty good haul. I know some guys who did the Oauchita though. I have a 12 hour race memorial weekend.
