Wheel bearing noise

Since breaking my arm I have been spending more of my time riding my old Bridgestone MB-3 Comp, and most of that time has been on pavement.

I noticed that the front wheel seemed noisy, so I turned the bike upside down this evening and gave the wheel a spin. It didn't spin very freely.

I took the axle out, noted that the grease showed a little evidence of rust, and cleaned everything up. No obvious rust, pitting or brinelling on bearings, cones, or races.

I was going to throw a new set of balls in even though I replaced them last fall, but found that I'm out of 3/16" balls, so I lubed everything up, adjusted the bearings, and now the wheel runs smoothly.

I'm starting to think that the cones somehow tightened up over time, although I'd be hard pressed to propose a means for them to do that.
