Had a job interview 2 weeks ago tomorrow. Sent a thank you letter the next day and an email last wed., to which I've gotten no reply. There are 10 candidates and I'm waiting to see if I got a second interview. She said it should be fairly quick and to expect a call (wanted to have someone hired ideally by end of the month). Should I call just to follow up and see where they're at in the process or wait for them to call? I want to seem interested, but not annoying.

call in and say something was wrong with your cell/phone network, and that you are just calling to make sure you didn't miss any news, thats when to ask.

Never second guess yourself as annoying when it comes to finding a job. Just call up and let them know that you are following up and just want to reiterate how interested and excited you are about the job, how you think you would be a good fit etc... and just want to know if there have been any desicions made yet.

If it's something that you want, go for it.

I'm pretty cynical about job interviews, having gone through a thousand. If two weeks past, then most likely you were not on the short list.

Flip it around. Lets say you interviewed the person you wanted working for you. Would you let that person wait around, keep looking for a job, and stew?

Or would you tell that person you wanted to hire to come back quickly?

The reason why they haven't called you back is that if their short list bombs, then they go to the next group...

Yeah just call, or at least go there and stand under the window with a stereo held over your head blasting some Peter Gabriel or something.

I wouldn't say this is true all the time. I sent in my resume to a company and then didn't hear anything for a month. Then I got a call, 2 quick interviews and then they made the offer. It seems like alot of companies start interviewing before they are actually ready for the position to be filled.

Uh, you kind of proved my point.

While there might have been a delay in getting to you, it sounds like the process was very quick after the first contact.

I am not trying to be mean. I was unemployed for 6 months last year, and one job promised to call either way after a good interview. I am still waiting for that call.

Well, I tend to agree with sanjuro on this one. The only time I've not had a call back within a week is when I didn't get the job, and that's happened twice in 25 years in the workforce.

No matter how good you are, or how perfect a fit you think you are for a job, there is always a change the person interviewing you is a nutter. Or you remind them of an ex-(spouse, stalker, arch-enemy),
or they have some hidden agenda.

There is also a chance they can't make up their mind and if you appear pushy or needy you might help them.

Did you call them back yet or what?
When I was out of work for a while I applied to any job that I thought I was even remotely qualified for. When I got called for an interview I didn't even know if I had applied but said yes. I started working the day after the interview. I looked back into my records and saw that I had applied for the job over a month before they called me. Who knows what they are thinking.

I would not call.
Wahoooo! I called this morning and she said they've been so tied up she hasn't had the time to schedule a follow-up interview into, but she would call me by the end of the week because she wants to bring me back in:biggrin:

Then, I just got a message on my office phone (first time she's called here) that she wants to interview me again tomorrow! :happydance:

Definitely no harm in calling once, as you found out.

It's not like it's someone whose number you got at the bar. In that case, yeah, one call and screw'em if they don't call back. A job interview is different, there is no harm in showing that you are interested. Of course calling and emailing every day would be over the line, but one call is certainly appropriate. Congrats :)

congrats on the second interview.

sanjuro: my experience is much like dfinn's, and sort of goes with both what you and he said as things were slow initially but then really quick. i think. hmm. anyway:

i interviewed with a firm on really short notice -- they called me up one day, i drove 4h (and they knew i drove 4h) to make it to an interview over lunch the next day. proceeded to go home, shut my cell off and generally ignore the outside world for the next 3 weeks. i check my voicemail finally and find a voicemail from one of the interviewers, call the next day, get an offer on the phone right there, and schedule myself to move in and start the new job the following week.
