Here in MA a cord (128 cubic ft) goes for around $275 delivered (ie dumped in your driveway, not stacked). If you like fires and have some storage space i'd get a 1/2 cord. You won't likely run out and it will spare you from the $10/fire store bought stuff. Make sure to measure it once stacked to ensure you don't get shortchanged.

Also see if the dude has 'fatwood', the resin impregnated wood from pine stumps. Lights with a match and is the ultimate fire starter (camping/bbq/fireplace). You can also buy this in stores by the box.
I just called my cousin in VT and they pay $185 for a cord.

We can store it under our deck I guess :)

How far from western MA are you? It goes for $180/cord once you get near the 84/90 junction. It would cost me $75 in gas and half a day to drive my truck there so I pay boston yuppie prices.

Check the boston globe classifieds, there's lots of listings.

Did your house get painted you or did the guy buy $400 in strippers while you were in FL?

LOL - I picked up the paint yesterday (California) and Steve is coming probably Monday to start. They guys said to give the primer 48 hours to dry so we're watching the weather for 3 nice days.

We are very close to western MA. IAB works in Sprinfield.

The landlord at our house had a sizeable dead cherry tree cut down and they left it in a big pile in the yard. I bet I have close to a cord of wood from that. I'm sure I'll go through it pretty quick. We'll probably have a fire almost every evening when it gets colder.

I've also been raiding the loading docks at work for pallets. I saw them up and they make great kindling.

If anyone is interested in what it takes to heat your house on wood alone, my parents back before they installed central heat I would estimate were using somewhere around 10 cords per season. They would usually have a fire going close to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from around early October to late March.

Yeah but like most things newer is better.I would imagine nowadays woodburning is alot more efficient.I want to look into one of the outdoor boilers but that is a lot of work....It would be freakin sweet to not buy oil though....

I've found a few local ads with people who will deliver wood - how Do I make sure it's not crap wood?
ask. Ask them where it came from, how long it's been cut, and what type of wood it is. Generally you want harder woods (oak, maple, etc. - not birch or pine) that has been sitting for at least a year.

For burning this winter make sure it's seasoned. Generally green wood, (freshly cut), is cheaper per cord. Green wood does not burn well. Check with any friends/neighbors you know in the area that buy wood and you should be able to find out who is reliable.

Another option would be to go for a drive in the more remote parts of CT and bring along a chainsaw. See a tree down on the side of the road on a remote, back road - take posession of it. :greedy: :busted: :lighten:

one word of note...i'd go on the side of ordering more than you need, so you have some extra drying time when wood carries over to the next year.

we ordered a cord of wood about 3 years ago (i think we got a bit more on delivery) and still have at least half of it left in our garage. that said, we don't have many fires anymore since we moved the TV from the fireplace room.

Folks with fireplaces, when the smokes exits your chimey where does it go? My neighbor heat with wood and the smoke just settles around my house and in my yard. Unless it is a windy day it is quite uncomfortable for me to be outside as it plays havoc with my asthma. I was kind of hoping there was something wrong so I could ask them to fix it.

There is a place down the street that sells chain saws. They have a huge pile of wood on the side from people testing saws and stuff. I used to get trunk loads (wifes car) for $20. It was a pile about 5'x3'x2'. Maybe $200 worth of Safeway wood.

Craig;s List works too.

Burning wood is heinously filthy. There's no getting around that. You can minimize by burning really hot, but it's filthy, pretty much no matter what you do.

Oh just burn their house down. If you toss burning sh1t on their roof it will look like their chimney was the cause of the fire.

good point...I chop all of my own and last year I chopped way to much and now I may have to chop about 10% of what I did last year :D....D
