Which cranks, Diabolus, Saint or XT?

I want to try out the new type of bottom bracket/crank sets, as i'm sick of Isis, and was wondering which would you choose for mostly trail riding and the occasional drop, jump, and DH a few times a year.

I am leaning towards the XT just cause of the weight, but am not sure how they would hold up. Can the new XT take some beating, or should I just go for a FR/DH crankset.

Also any negatives you might have heard about any of the cranks i've mentioned would also be most appreciated.

I beat the shat out of my XT's and they laugh. I wouldnt go with the raceface on this one. As much as I hate to support shimano those boys make some good cranks. The Saints are amazing as well a little heavy, im not sure if its really needed after seeing what the xt's can take.

I don't have experience with anything but the XT's. I've been riding them pretty hard on my trail bike for about 4-5 months, and they've been very solid. I would have no reservations about putting them on a more FR oriented bike.

But I think you should try the Diabolous so you can test them for us!

Someone posted here that his diabolus cranks have boogered in an x-type sort of way. Shimano did the right thing by having opposing pinch bolts.

I started a thread about FSA external bb cranks that you might want to look into.

If Saints are too heavy, wait for hones. They should be burlier than XT.

I know that raceface and shimano cranks and bbs are intercompatable. That's good news in case one brand proves better than the other. Odds are that FSA's will be as well.

I've been running a Diabolus for about a month with no problems. The set up is a bit tricksy with the different spacers and all, but once installed they run trouble free (so far). I was running an Azonic 454 before and the only real difference I noticed is the Diabolus's are lighter. I'm about 190lbs and they're just as stiff as tubular steel.

I have heard that the raceface BB are better, seals, diabolas are heaviest 1.2kg
saint 1.1kg. xt would be more like 800-900g or so. wieghts are what I have heard, maybe not actual. raceface also has a trailbike crankset, not light -not heavy. check those out.

In big drops you can break XT, standard race face, or isis splined BB's, it takes a lot of hits and big drops on a Hard tail though (they all lasted me almost a year to a year and a half). I now run the race face signiture splined BB and it is much more burly with a really thick spindle, hasn't broke yet (2 years and counting).

Saints look tough, friends of mine ride them and haven't had a problem at all.

Race Face Xtype offers more adjustability and finer chainline tuning...

Saint/XT have the sweet pinch bolt system which is a plus!

as recommended with any ISIS interface that you do not remove and install your cranks a million times... the pinch bolts seem to help with this sort of problem nicely

Truvativ is offering a outboard bearing system, we built a Cannondale Prophet at the shop last week and it had the new Truvativ outboard bearing crankset. Don't remember the model name off the top of my head.

Out of what you are asking, I'd go XT or Saint..... I would go Saint because I don't count weight much at all.

The hone crankset if at all anything will be heavier than the saint, it's meant to be a LX of Saint where as Saint is meant to be the XTR level.

Matt D You can break stuff if you ride it really hard for a long time?

:sneaky: you sure can

I think the question is how hard for how long for what weight penalty

The race face signature FR BB at 250 g has lasted me 2 years and counting, versus the race face srx at 230 g that lasted one year, versus the isis or shimano that lasted about a year too. (but heck, now we are talking about a ~2001 shimano or isis product so what do I know)

What a shame. I wonder why, larger spindle, smaller spindle?...
From what he was saying nominal size might be the same, but tolerances are not.

He also said this was true of Shimano & RF. Since this is not a "standard", he is probably correct.

I'd DEFINATELY go XT. I have 'em on my DH bike and they hold up real well. The BB is also so much better than regualar of ISIS. It's also easy to take on/off. Plus it's light.

iv rAN XT HOLLOWTECH 2'S ONmy dh bike all season andf they have been money. way stiffer than my holzfellers or stlos (obviosly) and they feel stiffer than my old profiles on a hardtail no less. i love em just order the arms seperatly and then get the race face x type bb much cheaper, and then get an e13 chain ring and you save a million dollars over getting just the baSIC SET OF XT'S. god damn caps lock button, ohh btw this set up weighs around 760 grams with a e13 40th bash gaurd that has been speedholed

Thanks for all the replies monkies. It seems like XT will be the way to go. The catalouge says they weigh 860 grams, so when I put a bash ring on it should be just fine for what i'm looking for.

Or mabye I should put a DRS on also...
