Can't really decide. On a bike that is definitely going to get the crap beat out of it, is it worth it for X.9 components, or should I save some money and go with X.7 stuff? I'd either get a whole X.9/PC-99/PG-990 setup or an X.7/PC-69/PG-970 setup.

X.7, it's cheaper to replace when it breaks (yes, "when") and I found it shifts just as well as X.9 stuff. Why can't you go X.7/PC-99/PG-990? IMO that would be the best combination.

I guess there's no chance of switching to a 105 derailleur with Attack shifter? That'd be my preference for both shifter setup and durability in the derailleur department. Then run the PC99 and PG990.

Yeah, I have an X.9 setup on my DH bike and it's super fantastic and all, and I figured it's time to upgrade my 4-year-old XT drivetrain on my hardtail. Decisions, decisions... we'll just have to see what the price difference between the X.7 and X.9 stuff is.

I got an x.7 derailleur and a right side x.9 shifter for my jump bike from cambria about two months ago. It all works. I got the 04 stuff but they changed some things about the 05 line to make it a little tougher. From what I can tell it's not like you're going to feel a difference in shifting with any of the sram components, they all work great. The only derailleur that seems to be any tougher is the x.0. I'd go cheap if it's between the 7 and 9.

because you can get an x9 in medium cage, and the x7 only comes in long, it's worth the few dollars to run a shorter chain and have less slap.

I like your thinking...

ya, that's what i was going to say. At the very least get a super short cage and a tight ratio cassette. You really don't need a huge gear range in a million increments. The only people that really do are people buying a kona bear or the like, real all mountain stuff, you know, like mountainbiking. I find that all those low gears are more crutch than anything else. You don't actually need em for anything.

Single speed = no thanks.

Once I acquire funds, I'm gonna go ahead and mix and match the parts. X.9 rear mech, X.7 rear shifter, PG-970 cassette, and PC-970 chain. Thanks to all who influenced this decision (except Don :eviltongu).
