I have received some Hayes brakes on my bike. They are supposed to be the Mags, but they have black levers, in fact they are all black. I havent got my digi camera but how do I identify the brake as either the Hayes Mags or HFX-9 ?
Look at the lever body/master cylinder, not the lever blade. HFX-Mags are a smooth, chunky wedge shape with a 2-bolt bar clamp and a tiny screw as master cylinder bleed cap. HFX-9s have a slimmer lever body with lines cast into it and a single-bolt pinch-style bar clamp and a plastic friction-fit plug (ugh!) as a master cylinder cap.
Funky Monkey's got this one mostly right. I replaced my HFX-9's with a set of '04 Mags and they came with black levers. They both use the same calipers, but the HFX's have the little plastic bleeder cap and the Mags use a screw. The resevoir shape is significantly different as well.
I also agree with MikeD regarding the HFX's plastic bleed cap. Not sure why they didn't use a screw for those as well because those lame little caps can pop off at the most inopportune time.
Thanks for the advice you monkeys. yeah was looking at the blade colour only, Mags I have, hope they are as good as my M4's.....forget I said that I don't want to start a debate...
