Im looking to get a new freeride bike that i can still pedal uphill a little. I was trying to decide between the bighit comp for 1600us or the stinky for 1300us. The stinky has a duel crown though which I prefer not to get. I would probably get a new fork anyway. Other suggestions are welcome for under $1700us.

For one those bike are way above the $1700 price range. Look at the Trek Bruser3 for about $1065 or buy one used. Try to save some green and spend the cash on what you realy want. Or buy a burlu hardtail.
My personal preference is the Big Hit, the stinky haas too mutch pedalbob and is less eficant.

if you dont want a dual crown stinky, get a coiler, you only lose 1 inch of travel (7 to 6 inches), but you get a sc fork and a bit easier pedaling bike.

leftover 04's are going for about 1000 bucks in shops, and if you can find them, stinkys are going for about 1100. just remeber that the 04 coilers have 5" of travel, while the 05's have 6".

There's probabally an ironhorse in that price range, either the '04 sgs freeride or one of the new '05s with the japaneese names. You could also look for an 04 giant AC on closeout or maybe find a cannondale gemini 900 on closeout.

Probably an '04 SGS on closeout from puperpo. Although you can still get a '04 Big Hit Comp if you ask your local Special Ed dealer nicely.
