After reading all the threads lately about DOT helmets, it got me wondering. What is the weight difference between a D2 bike helmet and say... a motorcross helmet?

Go with the helmet that doesn't cost 300 dollars and offers the same protection Giro mad max :p

First one btw.

Im at work now and this POS computer does not support the latest flash otherwise I would post a link but check out this companies MX helmets. At the level of MTB these days, particularly freeride and DH, dont even screw with the non DOT helmet.

I like the black star model.

I do agree with the Mad Max. Once I have to buy another helmet, I'm buying a Giro for sure. $100 msrp is awesome, especially when compared to the TLD prices. Black mad max this year looks sweet.

the most expensive troy-lee is what you want. Trick paintjobs and flames will protect your head way better than styrofoam and fiberglass ever will...

I am willing to bet I am the worlds foremost expert on this helmet decision.
I have had two D2 helmets and currently have an SE as well as a new D2.

My head has actually impacted every tree and exposed rock on the Deer Valley national course in 2002. I can say with 100% confidence that the D2 gave me more style AND protection than any low budget superblow blowout sale can offer.

I would recommend the D2 the SE is actually pretty heavy. Although I do ride
all the fast Gnarly big rocky courses with the SE.

Seriously, TLD. You can not go wrong.

I've got the tank and it does look better in real life than in the pics!
Be careful with the paint though, it's a bit weak and the scratches stand out big time! I took a tumble in mine last week and I nearly cried when I saw the scratches!
But it's an awsome helmet, so comfortable + coming from a Bell I've come to apreciate the lining that comes out to wash (a feature not present on the giro either) but then again it's a lot cheaper

The TLD SE lid is one of the lightest MX helmets ever produced, but it's still about a pound heavier than most MTB full-facers on the market right now. The best part about the SE helmet is that the ventilation system in the helmet actually works. This is not the case in every other MX helmet I've ever tried on. Granted, the SE's venting only works at speeds above about 15 mph, but when you get up to speed it's totally sweet.

Does anyone else think motos make your head look ridiculously big? I hate how my fox helmet makes it look like I'm a bobblehead or something.

My son tried on a TLD moto helmet and it made him look like a Spaceball.
He ended up getting the D2 that looks like it has the old Answer M8 graphics.
That helmet has definitely made him faster. I'm working the wife to get me a TLD Tank in sand.
My youngest rides(9yr old)w/ an HJC and that thing is probably heavier than his bike.
He's been lifeflighted out of our track and has broken two M-8 with his head in them. He will stay in a DOT helmet until he's 18.

Freezin my arse off!
I have both the D2 and the SE...the SE provides so much more protection...after wearing the SE and then putting the D2 back on..I feel like I have nothing on my head....
The weight of the SE over the D2 is under 300grams...about 3/5ths of a lb.

you can see from the pics how much larger the SE is over the D2.
yes...you look like you work for NASA...

Yeah, the SE is bigger, but its DOT and Snell approved. For the littel bit extra weight, you get a lot more protection for your brain. That was important to me. THe SE really doesn't feel to heavy to me. I think its perfect! I'm with Leethal, I always thought that MTB full faces looked like you stole a little kids moto helmet too, but I grew up around moto.
