After being born there, growing up there, and escaping the petty nastiness that is Quebec in the exodus of '76, I say we draw up the divorce agreement now. They can have the furniture and the dog, but the rest belongs to Canada.

It's funny.... they are so wrapped up in the romantic idea of being a sovereign nation that the logistics completely escape them. Besides basics like needing their own currency, military (yeah yeah shut up), postal service, and all of that, they will have serious economic issues.

They claim they will end up better off economically speaking because they will somehow be free of their share of the national debt, and having to give up tax revenue to the feds. (Don't ask me. I have no idea how that could be true). But just an example near and dear to me:

Montreal has a decently sized aerospace industry. Bombardier, Bell Helicopter, Pratt and Whitney (et al) all have pretty good sized facilities here. All of the companies receive money from the feds. It's an investment by the gov't, right? Stimulate the economy, increased tax revenue etc etc.... And that gov't money (especially in the case of Bell Helicopter) is why companies like to do business here. For Bell, having a facility here is actually cheaper than doing business in the US.

So let's extrapolate a little. Quebec separates, and claims everything within its borders. So the millions that the Canadian feds gave to Bell, one presumes, would have to be paid back. If Canada is not going to get the return on its investment (in the form of tax revenue and all of that), why shouldn't they expect their money back? Ok, so Bell will now turn to the Quebec gov't and expect the same kind of subsidies....or else. Because if that well dries up, Bell can easily load up a few trailers, and be outta here in an hour......and then 2000 Quebec tax payers are out of work. And Pratt and Bombardier are much larger companies here than Bell.

There is no WAY the piddly Quebec gov't can afford to bribe ALL of these companies to stay here.

The funny thing is, there are SO many people working for these companies that WOULD up and leave, and these same people are voting for separation. The mind boggles.

All they'd have to do is create a new tax to continue the bribing. Problem solved.
Exactly......"we" (or those who didn't pack up and leave), would be taxed even further beyond belief.....

And actually I was listening to CJAD on the way home the other day and people were calling in.....I was shocked and dismayed to hear that there is such thing as an English (anglo) separatist. WTF?? When did they show up? Makes just want to kill them right in the face.

Boot to the head.....
