When we went up there in early July, they asked us for our passports as we crossed the border. I've heard that they're sometimes cool about just accepting your driver's license, but I wouldn't risk it if I were you. That would suck to go all that way and not be let across the border.
when I went, I was advised to carry a passport, but you can get by with a drivers license and a birth certificate (a original from your local town hall is better than a copy). that shouldn't cost you much at all. have fun at Whistler!!!
Passports are best since they are one of the hardest to forge documents.
The official word is Original copy of birth certificate but I've been running on an old copy made with a fax machine for 4 years. The thing has been in my wallet the whole time and is quite tatered. While I wouldn't suggest this, I've never been given a hard time about it. (touch wood)
Just make sure you bring your Full Face. Also no Camelbaks since some guy came down A-Line and ended up hanging it out in the trees. Rember the full face!
I drove up to Whistler via Seattle earlier this month. A drivers license got me into Canada but the U.S. border patrol wanted a passport or a birth certificate to get back across. My advice: if you've lost your passport, bring your birth certificate...life will be much easier.
FWIW, neither the US or Canadian border guys looked at either of our "ID's" when we went to whistler a couple weeks ago (which was good b/c on the way back, Mobius didn't have ANY ID on him). I brought my birth cert. and drivers license b/c that's an acceptable form of ID, not the best, but acceptable.
