White people again

Apparently this is another chapter in that weird shlt that appeals to white people who think that meeting their neighbors will lead to something akin to to Saw the movie happening to their precious little children.

I can really think of no better example to set than teaching a 3 year old that candy and good things in life come from the trunk of a car in a parking lot.

I'm getting to be as racist as silver. And there's nothing more white than silver.

From a NYT article:

Trunk-or-treating — also known as Halloween tailgating — solves the rural conundrum in which homes built a half-mile apart make the simple act of ringing doorbells require some physical fortitude. Where neighbors are strangers, these community events substitute family-friendly entertainment for the unwanted risks of what lies behind each door.

And for churches that had disdained Halloween as a pagan ritual, trunk-or-treating has become a safe alternative for parents — and pastors — who wish to keep a watchful eye on children, often encouraged to dress as biblical characters.

God that sounds like a great way to completely screw up one of my favorite holidays as a kid...

Riding past the morgue.
I can see this in the first case that Dante's article lists. I grew up in a super small rural town and Halloween was teh suck. The one area that was even kind of "neighborhoodie" would be super saturated by every kid within 40 miles.

I just looked at all the pics. That is some creepy shiz... and it takes all the fun our of Halloween.

With that being said, we do something a little similar at the racetrack for our last race in October. Everyone decorates their trailers and we pause between rounds for the kids to trick-or-treat. It is actually pretty cool. But we don't do it in place of regular trick-or-treating.

I have been busy all week building a cemetary. Our neighborhood does halloween in a big way. We fully expect somewhere between 750-1000 kids this year.

I actually think it's a great idea. Not unlike the national Night Out thing the wife and I did a few months back. It was a very cool get together that got us out and meeting others in the area. Plus there were local businesses and folks talking. We had a very good time, I could see this being the same rather than the hit or miss candy action in are hood.

Sounds like a natural reaction to the movement of people into suburban hell... Yuppies in McMansions on 3/4 acre lots on a dead-end street miles away from any type of neighborhood. American Dream®, right?
:stupid:

The hood I grew up in, we played outside. My daughter seems to be the only kid outside 90% of the time in an area full of kids. When we went begging for candy last year, I was amazed at how many people did NOTHING for candy and only a hand full of kids out.

I was raised as a free range child. I think it is for the better.

Not even. This is one avenue where I see the potential. Can't you see the possibilities of greater return per malatov cocktail in a trunk full of a bunch of cheap felt fabric?
