Race course map. Besides the very top speed section this is a new course that's never been raced on:

Our trail crew headed by Peter Mills has been working on this course all season. Adding tons of flow, berms and drainage. This new race track will have more single-track than previous 5 K DH races and a sweet stream crossing to boot. As usual we will also host a chainless downhill race immediately following the main dh event on the same course for only $10.00 extra.

There will also be a ECCC collegiate race the same weekend. No ECCC races will interfere with the USAC Pro GRT/Gravity East dh race.

See ya at the race

Hey all,
I just wanted to post up ALL the rates for the 5 K DH to avoid any confusion.

Online registration is $28.00 + a processing fee of $3.25 from Active Online Registration.
Onsite registration is $35.00.
1 day USAC license if needed is $10.00.
Chainless dh is $10.00 if registered in the main dh event.

It's still a great idea to pre register to avoid lines and save a few bucks.

A lift ticket is required to ride the Cloudsplitter Gondola. 2 riders and their bikes fit comfortably inside for a 12 minute ride up.

Lift passes are:
$35.00 for a 1 day
$65.00 for a 2 day

Last year I had the option to purchase your lift passes (1 or 2 day) on Active when you pre registered. However, the $3.25 processing fee changed to $9.00 or $10.00 since Active charges a percentage of the total for their processing fee. That would completely wipe out the savings for pre registering. We want to keep this as affordable as possible for you and put on the best race we can, including a speedy registration.

The best deal is our Bike n Stay Packages. Bike n Stays will become Race n Stay Packages for 5 K DH Race Weekend. From $59.00 you get a nice motel room and your lift pass for the day. 1 place even throws in a hot breakfast. That can be found here:
http://www.downhillmike.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=56&Itemid=75

If you did 2 Race n Stays for Friday and Saturday the price would be $149.25.
For that you would get:
* 2 nights lodging
* 2 hot breakfasts
* Registration for the 5 K DH
* And 2 required day passes.

And as always season pass holders need only to register. They are all set with lift passes.

Tons of camping can be found here:
http://www.downhillmike.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=21&Itemid=164

I hope this clarifies things and I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have right here.

I rode much of the course yesterday and I have to say that the work you all did on the Cliffs of Insanity trail has been immense! I honestly grew to hate that trail with the "added" rocks and steepness due to erosion, but the berms and all the other work you all did has put my faith back in it! I could NOT stop riding it yesterday.

I got your phone message on my way home. We have been getting slammed on weekdays. I wish you could have stuck around for the end of the day run.

Just downhill and the chainless downhill.
Official ORDA Press Release:
Whiteface Mountain 5th Annual 5K Downhill Race

WILMINGTON, N.Y. – September 10th – 12th – The Whiteface Mountain Bike Park, operated by High Peaks Cyclery, is hosting their 5th Annual 5k Downhill Race. We’re proud to announce that this race is not only the finals for the Pro Gravity Tour, but also race seven of eight for the Gravity East Series.

Online registration for the 5K downhill is now open to the public!!!

The price is $28 for online registration, and $35 for on site registration. Visit www.active.com or call 1-877-228-4881 using event ID# 1878160. Online registration will end on September 8th. On site registration will be from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, and from 8 – 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. Lift tickets will be $35 for a one day and $65 for a two day during the race weekend.

The race will have a $5,000 cash purse that will be awarded for pro racers!!!

The top three places in all amateur categories for the downhill race will win prizes from our sponsors.

· Pro Men’s 1st place $1,500.00

· Pro Men’s 2nd place $750.00

· Pro Men’s 3rd place $500.00

· Pro Women’s 1st place $1,250.00

· Pro Women’s 2nd place $650.00

· Pro Women’s 3rd place $350.00

The Pro GRT has had a great season so far and Whiteface has every intention of perpetuating the trend. For the men’s overall standings Bryn Atkinson (Transition Racing) remains in the lead with 205 points. Andrew Neethling (Trek World Racing) is 75 points behind Atkinson and has an 85 point cushion over Justin Leov (Trek World Racing.) Logan Bingelli stands fourth, being nine points behind Leov at 111 points. Waylon Smith’s win moved him into a tie for fifth place with Kieran Bennett with 90 points each. In the women’s standings, Jill Kintner (Transition Bikes) leads with 275 points, 95 points ahead of Melissa Buhl (KHS Bikes) and 110 ahead of Tracy Moseley (Trek World Racing).

With the 2010 Gravity East Series over halfway done the competition is really heating up. Gavin Vaughan with 955 points and Geritt Beytagh with 940 points are neck in neck for the series. Adam Morse is in a close third with 850 points so anything could happen by the time the series comes to Whiteface especially with Geritt Beytagh dominating at Whiteface with a 1st and a 2nd the past few years.

This year the Whiteface Mountain Bike Park trail crew has been putting together a world-class track the likes of which has not been seen by the Pro GRT or Gravity East. The racetrack is going to be entirely different than previous tracks at Whiteface with new trail selections and vast improvements to all of our trails. The course is a full five kilometers long and mixes speed, fast flowing, and technical sections throughout.

Will you be able to race both ECCC and 5k races?
Yes you can since no ECCC races will interfere with the 5 K DH. You will need to be a student and register on site with the ECCC staff. Then you would need to register with our staff and Gravity East registration workers for the 5 K DH or the preferred online registration. Especially since you'd be registering for ECCC & USAC races on the same weekend. The more we can process before the better.

Our web site has just been updated. Online registration should be easy to find and we placed our event poster on the 5 K DH Menu for printing and emailing if anyone wants that.

Please remember there are many amateur (all Gravity East cats) categories to choose from. We have had some top names register already but this race weekend is for everyone. World Cup, Amateurs and collegiate racers. Remember the line up at the Plattekill Pro GRT.

Wait till you see our new course. It's sick! Peter Mills and crew have been working on the course top to bottom since early or mid June. Peter broke his foot at Highland (which sucks!) but Elias and company will pick up on the course construction. We still have lots of dirt for berms in key locations. Get better Peter!
I will continue replying to your questions with answers and pictures of the course:

See ya at The race

Taken from trail # 26 the Cliffs of Insanity. This is the upper section of single-track on the course. Never been raced on before:

Geritt Beytagh and Jason Memmellar visited the Whiteface Mountain Bike Park last week, checked out the 5 k dh course and timed a few runs. Unofficial results 8:45 with 1 crash (maybe 2).
Memmelaar on the top speed section:

Beytagh on the top speed section:

Just about to enter the 1st section of single-track:

Note. If you have already registered & not yet received your waivers: The USAC waiver, Whiteface waiver, event poster and 5 K DH itinerary are being emailed to you soon.

The trail crew has been out in full force making sure this "New 5 K DH Course" is the best we can make it from the start to the finish line. Pictures will follow.

I'd love to hear more about this course. I'd like to make this my comeback race after snapping both of my arms. Will save it for a different venue if it's going to be a hucker course or reminiscent of Mt Snow's Yard Sale. Does the 5K tend to have much carnage?

This years course will be different than all other 5 k dh courses. We have been fortunate to not have a lot of carnage at are races. I would say our course is like several race courses in 1. You start on the same speed section as last year, but go into the woods much sooner. The off camber trail across the black diamond ski trails have been eliminated.

Course description:
Trail 27 Evil Empire: Speed section. Racers can hit 40 mph + on this section. Maybe 400 feet of vertical?

Trail 26 Cliffs of Insanity:

Technical single-track with tons of flow recently added. You will love this section! Maybe another 500 to 600 feet of vertical on this section?

Connector to trail 24 Freedom:
This short section uses a service road with 3 turns. Maybe 100 feet of vertical?

Trail 24 Freedom: This is the lower section of trail 24 and was used in the 3rd annual 5 k dh course 2 years ago. All single-track and very fast. Not quite as steep as the Cliffs of Insanity but fast and plenty challenging. This section of trail has some of my favorite turns anywhere! You may like this section the best? Maybe another 6oo feet of vertical here.

Mid Station:
From the bottom of trail 24 you enter on the bottom of trail 4. Killer single-track with a sweet new bridge you can boost off of. This section is pretty short and comes out quickly at mid lodge. Now you are on an open section of ski trail for maybe 1/4 mile. Not quite as fast as the upper speed section, but I bet you are still going 25 to 30 mph. Maybe another 200 to 300 feet of vertical on this section?

Trail 5 The Judge:
This trail kicks ass! Enter on a bridge and into some more sweet single-track with tons of roots, and some sweet line choices. Over another bridge and onto the steepest part of the race course. 2 steep turns and jump over the pipe and exit the woods just above the pump track. Cross a ski trail and now you do the stream crossing (next to the waterfalls). Maybe another 200 feet of vertical?

Trail 13 Seek & Destroy: Still another 400 feet of vertical.
Lower mountain single-track with new berms on many of the turns (maybe all by next week). This is single-track you will pump and NOT use your brakes. This may be your favorite part of the course?

Trail 12 Opiate:
We connected trail 13 to 12 to avoid any uphill or flat sections. Trail 12 is similar to trail 13. Fast and in the woods.

Trail 9 the finish:

For those of you that have raced previous 5 k dh's, you finish on the same wood chip road as before, just 100 feet farther down the wood chips. Please don't confuse this with the wood s chips below mid used in all past 5 k dh's. Now just sprint to the finish line at the base area for a couple of hundred yards.

Hope that helps.
After writing that I want to go ride the course right now!

The course is looooong. And gnarly. Fast in most spots without a ton of pedalling. Definitely some hairy sections but nothing you have to send too huge. Transforms from high-alpine evergreen forest with big rocks to rooty east coast hardwood forest. Cliffs of insanity used to be tedious and slow with a lot of tricky moves, but has recently been opened up and bermed up to be a lot faster and in my opinion more race friendly. Rhythm is really important on such a long run. I wish I could make it.

Thanks for pre registering!

Just a reminder that we are still open 7 days a week until Labor Day. So, if you want to practice the course before race weekend, come on by. The course is not taped yet, but we placed W'face stickers on all trail signs along the course for you guys so it'll be easy to follow.

Weather has been hot and dry. Cold front coming through on Saturday.

Whiteface update:
The bike park and 5 K DH course will be open (9-4- 9-6) Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Labor Day). Then we close Tuesday thru Thursday and re open on Friday September 10 thru Race day September 12. So, if you are looking for extra practice on this very long course this is your weekend.

The weather will be in the mid to high 60's and the course is super dry. 30 % chance of showers this weekend would make the track nice and tacky.

Oh, since today is Ladies Day all women get a free lift!

Please register in the correct category.
If you do not have an annual USAC license you can only register in category 2 (sport) or category 3 (beginner). You cannot register or race in category 1 (expert) or pro classes.

To register in either category 2 or 3 you need to purchase the 1 day USAC license for $10.00. Available at the mountain and on our online registration.

Online registration closes on this Wednesday night.

We had over 200 riders this weekend checking out the course. Let us know what you think about the new race course please.

I'm signed up. Stupid question, do I need lift tickets separately. I'm guessing I do, but want to be sure before I book Ride & Stay.

btw - now that the bridge is gone, what's the best way over from VT.

Yes as Race Director Downhill Mike has posted you do need to purchase lift tickets separately check his site www.downhillmike.com for more details.

And I am taking the Ferry at Chimney Point, VT which is FREE and runs 24/7, the best way I have found without the bridge.

The weather once again for the Gravity East Series Weekend is looking absolutely tremendous.

I know people are inquiring about the bridge and Dan McDonald has addressed it but I will give you more info.

The Chimney Point - Crown Point Ferry is located on Route 17 W in Addison, Vermont located slightly east of the now under construction new bridge and right by the Bridge or NO Bridge Restaurant.

The ferry operates 24/7 and costs absolutely nothing. The ferry departs the Vermont side on the 1/2 hour and on the top of the hour. The crossing takes approx. 15 minutes. For more information visit www.ferries.com

See You on the Mountain !

I just spoke with John the owner. I knew there had to be some kind of mis understanding.
Here is the ad I made that is on our site:

Lift tickets are included with your room. You are all set. For $59.00 per person (based on double occupancy) you get:
a room, your lift ticket for the day and a continental breakfast.

Since there are 2 of you staying in the room, the total should be $118.00 + sales tax of maybe $10.00 or so.

John will give you a voucher for your lift ticket. When registering for the race just let the ticket sellers know you have a Bike n Stay voucher. If you pre registered you will be all set. If you still need to register it will be the onsite registration price of $35.00, then you'll be all set.

I was just informed that the Birch Tree Lodge has sold out of rooms for the 5 K DH weekend. This place is the same price and throws in a hot breakfast!

You may notice the bikes okay in rooms and dog friendly on the ads. As a downhiller that travels with his dog I knew what was important!

The collegiate Super D race starts at 9:00 am on Sunday.

The Downhill Gravity Est and Pro GRT starts at 12 noon with category 3 0-18 going 1st. My guess is the category 1 for dh starts at 1:30 pm or so.

Just be very clear with the registration workers you are registering for collegiate and USAC. You will have 6 pages or twice the paperwork to fill out though. You should go to our site and download as many forms as you need and fill them out in advance.

Please remember to add 1 year to your racing age if your birthday is later than 9-12.
