Big Plans for the Big Mountain!

Last season was our 1st real season of having a paid trail crew. Our customers really seemed to notice, and were noticing small improvements each week they came. We have always wanted to do that, but it just wasn't possible. The trail projects combined with other things led to our best year ever. A big thanks to all they came out to Whiteface! So, we plan on going for it more and more each year. Whiteface is huge and what we are picturing is really another 10+ years in the making.

In the next couple of weeks there will be an official press release from the NYS Olympic Regional Development Authority on a few things we have been working on this off-season.

Here is just a teaser of what we have been up to.

* For May and June of 2012 we have budgeted for 800 man hours of trail maintenance, improvements, re-routes, etc. just for our trail crew. More local kids and others have been showing up like crazy to help and possibly tripling the number of man hours (2,400 hours of trail work before we open!). We have also been speaking with a few trail builders getting quotes on either a jump line or flow trail. This will be completed before we open!

* Huge cycling event on our opening weekend of June 15 -17 with races and/or competitions in, downhill, dual slalom, road, x-c MTB, dirt jumps and trials. Combined athletes will total approximately 1,200 to 1,500!

* 7th Annual 5 K DH on 8-8/9, 2012.

More on this as great things progress.

Here's another angle and better pic of the stream crossing:

The mountain always had so much potential. It looks like you have turned a corner and the trails have improved enough to make it a real destination. I will ride Whiteface this summer; thanks for all your hard work and dedication.

Ya'll have alot of terrain. Any interest in pushing the east coast Enduro scene this season? Highland really did an amazing job last fall testing the waters, and the interest seems to be there. It'd be rad to see Enduro take off in these parts...

that would be a pretty intense race....climb it and descend it...that would be a hero race.

also, super stoked to see things going well for whiteface. i haven't been there in years (2006 maybe?) things seem to have come a long way, and that's a good thing. glad to see that the Regional Development Authority is starting to come around.

my one suggestion is more events. not the race-type events, but the "Weekend away" events. I remember the original Hcor discounted opening weekend events, and those were so much fun; some of my favorite weekends of riding. Maybe plan another get-together weekend event like that either at opening day or midway through the season.

Great to hear, Mike! I always look forward to Whiteface weekends and this year Jen and I had a chance to ride there in dusty conditions when we came up in August. What a treat!

Keep up the good work,

Luca

more like an hero race
Last year during the qualifier for the Leadville 100, guys on Cyclo-Cross bikes climbed 1,500 feet up Whiteface and descended. They will be doing that again this year.

And Hcor Day 5 years ago was great. 86 downhillers and a short lift line on opening day is what I remember. Tried it the next year and only had 1/2 of that?

Watch for more fun events and clinics at the Whiteface Mountain Bike Park. If we ever get the crowds that some other resorts get, you will see a jump line trail happen very quickly.

You have to get up there it is a blast to ride and completely different than platty. We always make it up there at least once a year. This past summer we went there for the 5k it was great being up there with half the Delta House crew, felt just like platty in the parking lot. Nolan and I also managed to drink til 3 am as usual.
