Why do we have the ATF?

Couldn't that just be a division of the FBI?

With all the talk about failed intelligence agencies, well, it seems like we have a lot of agencies.

What does the NSA do that the CIA doesn't?

I know that outstanding members of the Treasury dept. can be on the President's Secret Service staff, but why not fold the Treasury into the FBI or make a whole new agency that combines the FBI, Treasury, ATF, ???

Or is it really more efficient to have so many different and seperate agencies that don't necessarily communicate with one another?

The money budgeted for the Department of Homeland Security is going to fix all the communication problems, turf wars, and internal departmental infighting.
I can tell you don't believe it will fix the problems, but are you serious about the actually goal?

Orignally they were established as tax collection arm of the Treasury no?

Their website identifies them as part of the Department of Treasury in one spot and under the Department of Justice in another (ah post 9-11 cabinet shuffle)

Duplication of services? Not in our govt.

It certainly was listed as one of the functions it was supposed to serve. To provide a clearing house of information collected from the various intelligence agencies, CIA, NSA, FBI, and the other TLAs. Also to help facilitate communication in regards to duplicate effort.

"Why do we have the ATF?"

It's called "job creation"............
Besides, if you aren't a Government agency, how else do you pay for those "cool coats"?

The Dept. of Homeland Insecurity is another screamin' example of beaurocratic inefficiency, interfering and devolution.

primarily, they do signal intel (foreign & domestic), whereas cia is primarily foreign, or foreign nat'ls in our boundaries/territories. Also, cia is staffed by less, & do their own wetwork

they work more closely than is let on by various news sources, which in turn are spoon-fed by our beloved lawmakers on the hill
