The older style XTR BB's were a 68mm/73mm shell, They don't make an off the shelf 100mm. Its possible that Shimano made custom ones for pro racers, but good luck ever finding one.
it has been done, its just pretty expensive, shimano doesnt offer it, i read here that the b1 team ran some custom axles, im guessing you have to get some sort of damn hard steel axle, machine it and then grind the surface and heat treat but that would certainly cost you more than a few sets of cranks.
A few years ago foes used normal sized BB's. I built up one of the new syle monos' was an '02 and set up a set of xtr's on it. they were 73mm bb shells as far as i know. Unless your talking way back, then i dont know...
Sorry to make confusion-
I forgot that the Foes bikes i was speaking of were prototypes with 100mm shells. They never made production.
If your bike has a 100mm bb shell on it then a road bb will not work either,as they are 68mm.
Saint is coming out with a 100mm bb and spindle/crankset that would work but it is Octalink2 (outboard bearings)and the spindle is pemanently pressed into the right arm.
I'm still running my old XTR's on my XC/FR bike they are the shizzle. The longest spindle the made was a 116.5 or 188mm can't remember but as someone said you can use Ultegra or Dura Ace as they are the only other octalink BB's with compatible splines. I'm not a big fan on 100mm BB's for this reason...
Krispy said that Saint is available in 100mm I'd go that route for sure. I've been very happy with mine on the DH bike.
