You want your spring to have at least as much stroke as your shock. A little bit more is OK, if the spring fits on the shock body. 2.3 spring is fine on a 2.25 shock. If your spring stroke is shorter than your shock stroke, the coils on the spring could come into contact when the shock undergoes full compression...this isn't good.
