So I just purchased a Macbook and want to set up the internet on it at my house. We already have cable internet on the desktop. What things do I need to set up internet for this? I'm quite ignorant when it comes to computer stuff and what's actually available. My brother had set up(with the help of his friend) a desktop in another part of the house using a wireless router. Is that what I'd need?

You already have what you need. If your bro's router is unsecured, you can connect now. Otherwise, ask him for passwords, add MAC addressing, broadcast SSID or whatever other security features he's activated.

Oops. I forgot to mention, he DL'd a bunch of porn and got so much spyware the computer would barely start up. He ended up geting rid of the router.

Then do a search here for wireless router as BV, et al. already went over the
whole process with me when I had set mine up.
