Women Lead The Way In Fitness Activities
MAY 19, 2004 -- MT. PROSPECT, IL (BRAIN)--More women than men participate is four of the six most popular fitness activities, according to new research from the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA). Women make up about 46 percent of cyclists, the study found.
The group's Sports Participation study found that women made up 75 percent of aerobics participants, 63 percent of exercise walkers, 55 percent of those who work out at a club and 54 percent of those who exercise with equipment.
Women also made up a majority of participants in yoga, volleyball, kickboxing, ice skating and swimming. Women represented more than 45 percent of participants in nine other activities, including cycling.
The NSGA surveyed 20,000 households and defined a participant as someone who participated in an activity more than once. For cycling, walking, jogging and several other activities, the NSGA only included respondents who participated in the activity at least six times during the year. The full report is available online at www.nsga.org.
