Instead of the depressing "I'm injured" thread, here is a thread about almost being injured. ;) I jacked my hand/wrist up real bad at Windrock this weekend.
So, I go to my hand specialist today with my hand so swollen, I could have been a Lane Bryant hand model.
I knew the drill, I even turned my hand exactly like the x-ray girl wanted for the scaphoid shot. Having broke this bone before, I was trying to get mentally prepared for having to spend at least 3 months in a cast again.
My wrist is real sore right behind my thumb, and I was not very hopeful.
On top of that, the area right behind my index finger, and "my New Jersey state salute" finger was really swollen, and my fingers were kind of numb, and in pain at the same time. I was just hoping to luck out of the scaphoid fracture, and just have a broken bone in my hand.
So, when the Doc walks in, and says, "Your x-rays look good, nothing is broken!" I was absolutely floored. The Dr. even thought my hand was toast before they x-rayed it.
He said I just bruised my hand and my wrist real bad, and all the swelling was what was causing the pain and the loss of strength in my fingers.
Said I should be fine in a couple of weeks and I can ride when I feel like it. :thumb: :D :thumb: :D
Man, it felt like Christmas.
And check this, I had to wait for over an hour beforehand because of an "emergency." So this dude walks out looking like he got hit by a school bus. His hand was all mummyfied, he had bandages all over his legs etc...
Then he looks up at me, and says, "This is what Ivan did to me."
Turned out this man lives in Grenada and got worked when Ivan came through. It killed a bunch of people there, and this man was almost one of them. He was tripping, he had that whole "I got a newfound respect for life"
thing going on. I don't know why in the world he was in Spartanburg, SC though. Maybe Ivan blew him there, but that dude was lucky, even luckier than me. ;)
I was wearing an EVS wrist brace, maybe that is what saved my wrist. I don't know, but its worth pointing out.
See ya guys on the trails!

Not to be a downer but X-Rays have a really rough time showing a broken scaphoid.

I went in to the Emerg. at my local hospital after bailing on my wrist. After looking at the X-Rays they said my scaphoid probably wasn't broken but they put a soft cast on me anyways and scheduled an appointment with a specialist in the fracture clinic. The Dr. pulled my x-rays up on the computer again, zoomed in, changed lighting, everything but still wasn't satisfied. He told me to come back in a couple weeks and they would do more x-rays. When I told him I was racing that weekend and needed to know whether it was cracked or not he sent me straight into the CT room and within 1 hour I was looking at cutaways of my scaphoid. No break but he just wanted to be sure.

Bottom line is I know tons of people who have raced entire season with broken scaphoids only to finally find out that it was in fact broken the whole time and now they need surgery. I know in the U.S. you guys have to deal with medical bills and such but if you have insurance that will cover it it's worthwhile to get a CTscan. It could be the difference between a cast for a few months or surgery, then a cast for a lot of months.

Yay

You coming to mammoth?
NO, I've been after him to go, but after winning the Maxxis Super South Series he's all big in the head (and hand) and doesn't think the National Championships are any big deal. :nopity:

;)

JR, good to hear about the wrist. Looks like Ivan is going to ruin my weekend of training before Mammoth. Oh well, nothing I can do about that but practice in the rain. :blah:

Thanks for the concern Fury.
I have heard of this happening as well.
But I trust this Dr.
He is the one that found my first fracture after two other places said it was not broken.
He showed me my old x-ray and then the new one, and you could see the scaphoid easily in the pic.

And Profro I wish I could go to Mammoth, but me and my wallet are burnt out for the season.
Oh yeah, one more tidbit to the story. When I changed clothes hours after the crash, I noticed these red scratches all over my hip from sliding on it.
No big deal, happens all the time right?
Well, evidently I slid through a patch of poison oak. My entire side is covered in it about the size of a basketball. Its just a matter of time before it spreads around to the fun zone. :mumble:

Great now that is all over my couch. :oink: :D

Hey, sell that fork and use that cash to get a ticket. We're camping with JP and the GO-Ride boys so it will be cheap.

Over your shoulder whispering
damn it JP, you lurker....can't believe you came here the week OF WINDROCK...and then skipped town without us....all for some "quality time" at the lake with your imaginary girlfriend. "No implication of slander toward any Go-Ride employee or Go-Ride racer was made during this blatant attack on JP" :D

Good to hear you're not all broken. Sounds like windrock kicked some ass this race, huh? Oh, and good luck with the poison ivy.... I can't imagine that'd be a good feeling in the party zone.
